The Fable 5 export controls are officially over. On June 30, Anthropic announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted the restrictions that had blocked global access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models, ending an 18-day standoff between the company and the Trump administration.
“We’ve received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5,” Anthropic said in a statement. “We’ll begin restoring access tomorrow, and will share an update soon. We’re grateful to our users for their patience, and to everyone who worked with us on redeploying the models.”

Why the Fable 5 Export Controls Were Imposed #
The story began on June 9, when Anthropic launched Fable 5, its first publicly available model built on the new Mythos-class architecture. Just three days later, the Commerce Department sent CEO Dario Amodei a directive citing national security authorities. The order required Anthropic to suspend access for any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States — including the company’s own non-citizen employees.
Anthropic said segmenting users by nationality in real time was technically impossible, so it took both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline globally rather than risk violating the directive. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the reversal directly, stating that the Bureau of Industry and Security’s review of diversion risk led it to withdraw the controls outlined in the June 12 letter.
