The US is assembling its biggest tech names for a G20 ministerial aimed at shaping global AI policy ahead of Trump's December summit
The United States is turning a G20 ministerial meeting into something closer to a tech industry power summit. Elon Musk, David Sacks, Jensen Huang, and Sam Altman will all speak at a two-day gathering in North Carolina on September 1 and 2, joining government officials and international delegations to hash out a global approach to AI regulation.
The timing, just months before President Trump hosts the G20 leaders’ summit at his Doral, Florida golf club in December, signals that Washington wants AI governance to be a centerpiece of its G20 presidency.
The lineup and the agenda #
Day one of the ministerial, scheduled for September 1, will feature virtual appearances from Musk, Sacks, and Dina Powell McCormick. Day two shifts to in-person energy, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman taking the stage.
The marquee event looks to be a fireside chat between Altman and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, focused on the future trajectory of AI development. That pairing is notable: Lutnick co-organized the entire meeting alongside Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
The goal, broadly, is to build consensus among G20 nations around a non-binding regulatory framework. Delegations from Japan, South Korea, India, and Saudi Arabia are expected to attend.

Wall Street wasn’t subtle about its reaction. Nvidia shares surged more than 6% in connection with the announcement, a move that reflects broader investor optimism about the direction of US AI policy.
