Cursor has cut the price of AI coding in India to about $7 a month. The interesting part is how it can afford to.
The startup launched Cursor Start on Monday, a ₹649 plan sold only in India, TechCrunch reported. It sits well below the $20 Pro subscription. It is also the first time Cursor has localised its pricing anywhere.
India earned the discount. It is already Cursor’s third-largest market and has the highest concentration of power users on the platform. Its user base tripled to more than three million developers in a year, according to Inc42. GitHub counts more than 27 million developers in the country, second only to the US.
Why $7 is not a loss #
The plan runs on Cursor’s own models, Composer and Grok 4.5. It leaves out the frontier systems from OpenAI and Anthropic that power the top tier. That choice is the whole trick.
Renting the most expensive models is what makes cheap plans lose money. Running on models it controls is what keeps the maths viable at a third of the Pro price.
“We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale,” Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, told TechCrunch. He said the plan is sustainable rather than a loss leader, precisely because it leans on the cheaper in-house models.
Start includes cloud agents, the iOS app, plugins and higher usage than the free tier. It drops the OpenAI and Anthropic frontier models, plus advanced features like Bugbot and the SDK. It is billed in rupees, takes cards and UPI, and blocks access over VPNs.
Cheap here, dearer there #
The India cut lands in a revealing week. The Information reported that Cursor’s customers are fighting price hikes in contract talks, as it pushes enterprise rates up.
The two moves are less a contradiction than a strategy. Cursor is discounting where it is buying scale, and raising where it has pricing power. That is a familiar tactic as the economics of agentic coding bite. GitHub recently froze new Copilot sign-ups when usage costs outran its pricing, and the industry is still working out the real cost of enterprise AI.
The India land grab #
Cursor is not the first to price for India. OpenAI launched its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go there before rolling it out elsewhere, and Anthropic localised Claude’s pricing for the country this month. The biggest AI firms are all chasing the same fast-growing pool of developers.
Cursor is hiring on the ground too, adding sales, support and government-affairs staff across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Green said Cursor could extend localised pricing elsewhere if the India model works. “It’d be crazy to say we would never do it elsewhere,” he said.
Under new ownership soon #
All of this arrives with a new owner in the wings. SpaceX agreed in June to buy Cursor’s parent, Anysphere, in a $60bn all-stock deal due to close this quarter. The two have partnered on coding tools since April.
Green said Cursor will run independently until the deal closes, and that the India plans predate it. He added that SpaceX’s Starlink presence in the country could help Cursor expand faster afterwards. The discount, then, is an opening move in a market Cursor means to own well before it becomes a rocket company’s software arm.
