Anthropic's browser extension upgrade turns Chrome into a persistent AI workspace that follows users across tabs and tools
Anthropic just made its Chrome extension significantly more useful. Claude sessions that start in Cowork or Claude Code now sync directly with the browser extension, meaning users can carry full AI context into their Chrome workflow without starting over. The update also brings support for Skills and Connectors, two features that were previously confined to other parts of the Claude ecosystem.
What Skills and Connectors actually do #
Skills are markdown-based instruction files that tell Claude how to behave in specific contexts. Some are custom-built by users, others come predefined for particular use cases. A legal team might have a Skill that instructs Claude to draft responses using specific contract language. A developer might use one that enforces a particular coding style.
Connectors are integration bridges. They link Claude to external tools and data sources like Google Drive, Gmail, and Slack through MCP (Model Context Protocol) connections. Previously, if you wanted Claude to pull context from your email or a shared drive, you had to copy-paste like it was 2019. Connectors let Claude reach into those services directly.
How Cowork synchronization changes the workflow #
Cowork is Anthropic’s collaborative AI environment, designed to let users run persistent sessions with plugins for Skills, Connectors, and sub-agents. Sessions initiated in Cowork or through desktop tools like Claude Code now maintain continuity when accessed through Chrome. The practical implication is straightforward: you can start a complex task on your desktop, switch to Chrome for web-based research or data entry, and Claude stays aware of the entire conversation history and configured tools.
Cowork also supports configuring these plugins on a per-conversation basis through desktop settings, which means users can tailor each session’s capabilities without affecting their default setup.
Who gets access and what it costs #
The synchronization and new feature support are available on Anthropic’s paid tiers: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Free-tier users won’t see these capabilities.
The update, which arrived as part of a Chrome extension refresh on August 7, represents part of Anthropic’s broader 2026 push to refine Claude’s multi-platform experience.
