The committee will tackle crypto assets, AI, and prediction markets in its first session since launching earlier this year
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is convening its brand-new Innovation Advisory Committee for the first time on August 20, a three-hour virtual session that will dig into some of the most consequential questions facing financial regulators right now: how to handle crypto assets, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets.
The meeting runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT and marks the formal debut of a body that could shape how Washington regulates the next generation of financial products.
What the IAC actually is #
The Innovation Advisory Committee launched in January 2026 as a successor to the CFTC’s Technology Advisory Committee, which covered similar ground.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig sponsors the committee. Michael Passalacqua serves as the Designated Federal Officer, essentially the person responsible for making sure the committee follows federal advisory rules and actually produces useful output.
The membership roster, announced in February 2026, reads like a who’s who of firms operating at the intersection of traditional finance and digital assets. Executives from Coinbase, Ripple, and Gemini sit alongside leaders from derivatives firms and fintech companies.
The IAC’s formal mandate is to advise the CFTC on how technological advancements, blockchain chief among them, affect market integrity and regulatory frameworks for financial, derivatives, and commodity markets.
Why the timing matters #
Prediction markets have exploded in popularity, raising questions about where the line sits between legitimate financial instruments and something closer to gambling. The CFTC has jurisdiction over derivatives, which means event contracts on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket fall squarely in its lane.
The agenda for the inaugural meeting is expected to cover recent CFTC activity in crypto assets, AI, and prediction markets, giving committee members a chance to weigh in on where the commission’s approach is working and where it needs adjustment.
What this means for markets and stakeholders #
For prediction market platforms, the CFTC’s stance on event contracts will determine which products can legally be offered to US customers. The virtual format of the meeting, confirmed through a Federal Register notice, means industry participants and the public can observe proceedings without traveling to Washington.
