Every Thursday, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office publishes a fresh batch of patent applications. Most of them are routine: defensive filings, small tweaks to existing IP, paperwork nobody outside an examiner’s office will ever open.

But a patent is one of the more honest documents a big company produces, and one of the earliest. Companies file claims two to four years before products ship, sometimes before a project even has a name. By the time something turns up in a keynote, the patent behind it has often been public for a year or more.

This week’s drop included more than 600 new applications across the 17 companies we cover at Patentlyze. We wrote up 224 of them. These ten stood out.

1. OpenAI is designing chips now, and this one refuses to waste a move #

OpenAI files so few patents that any new application from them is worth reading, and this one is about silicon, not software: OpenAI’s patent for a chip that runs AI math forward and backward without moving the data.

Nearly everything a model does comes down to multiplying matrices, and training requires running those multiplications in two orientations, normal and transposed. Today’s hardware handles that by physically shuffling the numbers around, which costs more time and energy than the math itself. OpenAI’s filing describes a unit that performs both orientations on the same stored weights, so nothing ever has to move.

The invention is clever, but the applicant is the story. A company that buys GPUs by the hundreds of thousands is filing patents on the internals of AI hardware. That says something about how much of its future OpenAI intends to build itself.

2. Waymo’s cars share notes on where pedestrians hide #

A driverless car approaching a blind corner cannot see what is behind it. Waymo’s answer is to make sure some other car already has: Waymo’s patent for teaching its fleet to expect hidden pedestrians at specific locations.

Every Waymo vehicle that passes a spot records what tends to appear there, people stepping out from behind a parked truck, cyclists emerging from an alley. The fleet pools those observations into a location-by-location memory, and each car adjusts its behavior at that corner before it can see anything at all.

Most occlusion systems choose between braking hard at every blind spot or assuming a generic phantom pedestrian everywhere. A learned, per-corner expectation is a third way, and our read gives this one a high chance of being granted. Every driverless mile quietly becomes a rehearsal for the next car through.

3. Samsung’s TV blurs the score before you see it #

You recorded the game and you have made it to the fourth quarter unspoiled. Then you search for the broadcast and a thumbnail ruins everything. Samsung feels your pain: Samsung’s patent for a TV that automatically blurs spoilers in search results.

The filing describes a spoiler prevention mode built into the television itself. When you type a search, the TV first judges whether the query is the kind that surfaces outcomes, then screens the incoming results and hides the images and text likely to give something away before they reach the screen.

It is a small, human problem, which is exactly what makes it a good patent. Streaming turned every search box into a minefield of scores and plot reveals, and Samsung is proposing the shield live in the hardware where every app has to pass through it.

4. Google’s earbuds check your ears by sonar #

Earbuds already guess whether they are in your ear with proximity sensors, and they guess wrong often enough to be annoying. Google wants to stop guessing: Google’s patent for earbuds that bounce sound off your eardrum to tell whether they are really in.

The technique, audioplethysmography, sends tiny inaudible signals into the ear canal and reads what comes back. The acoustics inside your ear change in distinctive ways when a bud is seated, loose, or being adjusted, so the earbud can tell not just worn versus not worn, but whether you are fiddling with the fit.

Google has already used this acoustic trick to read heart rate. Repurposing it for wear detection means fewer podcasts blaring from a nightstand, and it hints at earbuds that understand the state of your ear well enough to adjust themselves to it.

5. Apple wants your buttons to feel like jelly #

Apple has spent years making glass feel like paper, rubber, and springs. The next material is softer: Apple’s patent for on-screen elements that squash and stretch based on how you swipe.

The filing describes interface objects, buttons, cards, panels, that deform like soft physical material under your finger: stretching in the direction you push and compressing at right angles, with the motion of your gesture deciding how much. Push a list past its end and it bunches up; flick a card and it elongates.

Animation studios call this squash and stretch, and it is the oldest trick in the book for making drawings feel alive. Apple patenting it for UI is a signal about where its interfaces are heading: away from flat tap targets and toward things that behave like objects.

6. Sony’s headset knows when the real world needs you back #

Every VR player knows the blind panic of a knock on the door mid-session. Sony’s PlayStation arm wants the headset to handle it: Sony’s patent for VR that switches to a real-world view on its own.

The system runs two watchers at once. One tracks events inside the game, your character dying, a match ending. The other tracks events in your room, someone walking in, movement near you. Either one can trigger the headset to swap the virtual scene for camera pass-through at exactly the moment it makes sense.

The interesting choice is treating in-game events as a reason to show reality. A headset that surfaces the room when your round ends is a device that understands immersion as something to be released from, not just maintained, which is a more honest model of how people actually play.

7. Nvidia’s servers would serve the frustrated first #

Every AI service has a queue, and every queue is first come, first served. Nvidia is proposing a more emotional order: Nvidia’s patent for an AI scheduler that ranks requests by detecting user mood.

The system estimates how much compute each incoming request needs, then runs a second model that reads the user’s apparent state from their query, calm, confused, frustrated, and folds that into the priority decision. The annoyed user with a quick question may jump the line ahead of the patient user with a heavy one.

Queue management sounds dry until you realize it is the customer service desk of the AI era. Nvidia embedding sentiment into scheduling is a bet that the scarce resource of the next decade, GPU time, will be rationed partly by how you feel.

8. IBM’s AI phones a human when it is stuck #

Most AI systems either answer or hallucinate. IBM is patenting the third option nobody ships: IBM’s patent for an AI that admits it does not know and finds a human who does.

The filing describes a retrieval-based assistant that recognizes when its sources cannot support an answer, identifies which expert inside the organization holds the missing knowledge, routes the question to them, and then folds the human’s answer back into its knowledge base so it never has to ask twice.

The permanent learning loop is the good part. Every escalation makes the system smarter, which means the humans get interrupted less over time. An AI that knows the limits of what it knows is rarer, and more useful, than one that sounds sure.

9. Intel would let you set an expiration date for your processor #

Chips age. Run them hot and hard and they wear out sooner. Intel wants to hand you the dial: Intel’s patent for letting users set a custom lifespan for their chips.

The filing describes a controller that takes a target, make this processor last five years, and continuously adjusts voltage, frequency, and workload to hit that date. A chip with a three-year mission can run harder than one that has to survive ten.

For data centers, this turns silicon aging from an accident into a budget line: hardware that depreciates on schedule because it was told to. It also quietly reframes what a processor is, less a fixed object, more a resource you spend at a chosen rate.

10. Disney puts pictures inside actual crystals #

The most magical filing of the week is also the most literal: Disney’s patent for projecting images directly into natural crystals.

The system pipes light through fiber optics into a lens assembly aimed at real minerals, ulexite and selenite, that have unusual optical properties of their own. Ulexite is nicknamed TV rock because it naturally transmits images along its fibers. The result is a picture that appears to float inside a stone, with no visible screen anywhere.

Disney’s entire craft is hiding the machinery, and a glowing crystal that shows you a scene is about as hidden as machinery gets. Expect this one somewhere a themed land needs an artifact that feels found rather than built.

What ties them together #

Read the ten back to back and the theme is self-awareness. The interesting machines this week all know something about their own state or yours: an earbud that senses its own fit, a headset that senses your room, a chip that manages its own aging, an AI that recognizes the edge of its own knowledge, a scheduler that reads your mood, a TV that guesses what you do not want to see, a fleet of cars that remembers what it cannot currently see.

The public conversation about AI is still mostly about raw capability, bigger models, better answers. The filings suggest the companies are equally busy on a quieter problem: teaching machines to notice, their surroundings, their limits, their users. Judgment, not just power. That is usually the better place to look if you want to know what is actually coming.
