Ltd. launched its brand in Indonesia at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang, anchoring its right-hand-drive market entry on electric passenger vans, city commuters and commercial delivery trucks.
Operating through its local subsidiary, PT BAW Automobile Trading Indonesia, the manufacturer plans to establish a local knock-down assembly plant in West Java. The facility will serve as an assembly and export base for right-hand-drive markets across Southeast Asia.
BAW’s electric vehicle catalog at GIIAS leads with the M8, a full-size electric multi-purpose vehicle targeted at corporate fleets, airport shuttles and family transport. Fitted with an 81 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack paired with a rear-mounted 170 kW electric motor, the M8 delivers a claimed driving range of up to 505 kilometers under the CLTC testing cycle. Fast-charging hardware allows the pack to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in under 45 minutes.
For urban commuters, BAW introduced the D5, a low-cost, pure-electric city hatchback built for tight metropolitan streets and price-sensitive private buyers. On the commercial side, the brand rolled out the T10 Pro, an all-electric light commercial truck designed for last-mile logistics, urban parcel delivery and mobile vendor fleets looking to reduce daily operational costs.
Local assembly forms the core of BAW’s regional growth strategy. Tocy Tang, president director of PT BAW Automobile Trading Indonesia, said establishing domestic knock-down manufacturing allows the company to meet Indonesia’s domestic content regulations.
Indonesia’s local content policies require carmakers to source a set percentage of components locally to qualify for tax breaks, including reduced value-added taxes and import tariff waivers. Assembling vehicles in West Java also gives BAW tariff-free trade access to neighboring Southeast Asian nations under regional trade agreements, provided the vehicles meet local origin thresholds.
Along with its electric lineup, BAW showcased traditional internal combustion vehicles.
Founded in 1951 as China’s second state-owned vehicle manufacturer, BAW built its early reputation supplying light trucks and 4×4 transport vehicles to Chinese armed forces. The company developed the iconic BJ212 off-roader in 1965, a rugged military utility vehicle that served as China’s primary government command car for decades. After operating under state-owned BAIC Group for years, BAW privatized in 2020 and moved its headquarters to Qingdao, Shandong, pivoting its product engineering toward civilian electric vehicles and commercial export markets.
BAW enters a competitive market where Chinese automakers like BYD Co., Wuling Motors, Chery Automobile Co. and DFSK already operate local factories. By bringing pure-electric vans and commercial light trucks alongside gas-powered utility vehicles, BAW aims to carve out a foothold across commercial and private fleet channels in Southeast Asia.
