The banking giant taps Sonali Theisen and Kevin Milsom to lead its push into tokenized assets and AI transformation
Bank of America just made its clearest statement yet about where traditional finance is headed. The bank appointed Sonali Theisen as head of its global digital assets platform and Kevin Milsom as head of AI transformation, two roles that sit squarely at the intersection of legacy banking and the crypto-native future.
The moves, announced on July 17, aren’t happening in a vacuum. They follow the June 2026 appointment of Adam Dixon as global head of digital asset transformation, a role BofA created specifically to unify its tokenized asset and blockchain efforts across the entire enterprise.
The tokenization thesis #
Theisen’s new mandate is broad. She’ll lead the global digital assets platform while continuing to oversee electronic trading and strategic investments across fixed income, currencies, and commodities. Her work will be coordinated with Dixon’s enterprise-wide blockchain initiatives.
BofA isn’t just dabbling in crypto custody or letting wealthy clients buy Bitcoin through a wrapper product. The bank is building infrastructure for tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and digital collateral, the plumbing layer that could reshape how capital markets actually function.
The bank has described its tokenization vision as “mutual fund 3.0,” positioning tokenized assets as the logical next step after mutual funds and exchange-traded funds reshaped asset management in previous decades.
AI as the other half of the equation #
Milsom’s appointment as head of AI transformation runs parallel to the digital asset push. BofA has already demonstrated serious commitment on the AI front. Early in 2026, the bank reported that its AI-driven client interactions had reached 30 billion. That’s not a typo. Thirty billion interactions suggest that AI is already deeply embedded in BofA’s customer experience layer, from chatbots to portfolio analytics to fraud detection.
What this means for investors #
When Bank of America starts building dedicated C-suite roles for digital asset strategy, it sends a signal that reverberates well beyond Charlotte, North Carolina. The appointments of Theisen, Milsom, and Dixon suggest BofA is trying to move from follower to leader in this race.
