Two developers used AI coding assistants to reverse engineer Apple Silicon GPU firmware and build a functional OpenGL ES 3.0 driver, achieving high performance in applications like Minecraft.
Two developers developed a fully compliant OpenGL ES 3.0 GPU driver for Apple Silicon hardware. The project, documented at spanned approximately one month. The authors utilized AI coding assistants to facilitate the development process. To avoid inspecting proprietary binaries, the team performed clean-room reverse engineering using a custom hypervisor to map firmware ABIs and hardware instruction sets. The implementation covers kernel-space development, including management of RTKit firmware and work submission queues, alongside user-space integration within the Mesa graphics stack. The resulting driver supports demanding software, such as Minecraft, at high frame rates. The team reports that the unprecedented nature of an AI-authored graphics driver presents significant challenges for future human review and upstreaming processes.
