Apple is cutting jobs across teams working on Siri, the Vision Pro headset and artificial intelligence, as the company shifts resources toward new devices and AI projects it sees as more important to its future.
The cuts affect employees working on Siri as well as teams behind Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Apple is also laying off workers from its Intelligent Systems Experience group, which sits within the company’s software engineering organization and works on some of the AI features built into Apple products.
The move comes at a time when AI has become one of the biggest priorities in the tech industry. Companies such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI are racing to build more capable AI assistants and tools, putting pressure on Apple to show that it can keep up.
Apple’s works hard on Siri #
The company has been working on a more advanced version of its digital assistant that would be able to understand context better and carry out more complicated tasks across Apple’s apps and services. But some of those capabilities have faced delays, leaving Apple playing catch-up in an AI race that has moved incredibly quickly.
The latest job cuts could be part of an effort to reorganize those teams and concentrate employees on the AI projects Apple considers most promising.
In other words, the company may be trimming some areas while moving resources toward others rather than simply reducing its overall investment in AI.
Cuts involving Vision Pro tell a slightly different story #
Apple launched the headset in 2024 with the product positioned as a major step into spatial computing. The Vision Pro attracted plenty of attention, but its high price has made it difficult to reach a mass-market audience. That has raised questions about how quickly the technology can become a meaningful business for Apple.
Reducing jobs connected to Vision Pro does not necessarily mean Apple is giving up on the headset or spatial computing. It could instead signal that the company is becoming more selective about how much money and manpower it puts behind the product while focusing on projects with stronger growth potential.
The changes at the Intelligent Systems Experience team are particularly interesting because the group works on AI experiences across Apple’s devices. Its restructuring could indicate that Apple is changing how it organizes its AI development rather than simply cutting back on the technology.
Apple has been adding AI features to the iPhone, Mac and other products, but the company still has something to prove. Its competitors have moved quickly, and consumers are increasingly expecting AI to be a meaningful part of their everyday devices.
