Apple is putting AI assistants built on its own models and OpenAI’s into Keynote, Pages and Numbers, and opening the three apps to outside AI agents, in a November update to its Apple Creator Studio subscription that it announced on Tuesday.
The assistants arrive in beta and understand what is in the document you have open, Apple says. In Keynote the assistant helps design, animate and refine slides; in Pages it drafts, restructures and polishes writing; in Numbers it calculates, organises and charts data, suggests chart types with a one-tap preview and builds tables using what Apple calls “world knowledge”. Logic Pro for Mac gets its own intelligent assistant, also in beta, which Apple says can start a new song, set up a vocal track from a single prompt or help refine a project in progress.
Apple picks OpenAI, not Google, for this one #
Apple says the assistant in Keynote, Pages and Numbers is “built on Apple models and OpenAI”, and that the Logic Pro assistant is “powered by a combination of Apple-built models and OpenAI”. It doesn’t say which OpenAI model is involved, which requests go to OpenAI rather than Apple’s own models, or how much of a document leaves the device.
The choice stands out. The new Siri runs on Google’s Gemini, and OpenAI said in a court filing last month that ChatGPT in Siri was “dramatically underperforming” within months of launch. Now OpenAI has a role inside Apple’s own work apps instead.
AI agents can work inside your documents #
The update also adds Model Context Protocol (MCP) support to Keynote, Pages and Numbers. MCP is the open standard Anthropic created for connecting AI models to apps and tools, now looked after by the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation. Apple says it lets external AI agents and tools read content, make edits and run automated actions directly in the three apps. It needs macOS 27 or later, and isn’t available on iPhone or iPad.
Keynote also gains Keynote Interchange Format (.keyx), which Apple describes as an open, JSON-based bundle file format “designed to be readable and accessible to external tools, developer workflows, and AI agents”.
Generate Fill and text-to-image #
Pixelmator Pro gets Generate Fill: circle part of an image, or pick it with the app’s selection tools, describe the change you want, and the app generates new content that Apple says matches the surrounding lighting, perspective and texture. Final Cut Pro and Motion can now generate images from text descriptions inside a project, and Freeform will create editable shapes from text in December. Apple doesn’t say which models power the image tools.
Beyond AI, Final Cut Pro for Mac gets built-in MotionVFX effects and stock video, and Logic Pro gets a Liquid Glass redesign and a Stem Splitter that can now separate drums.
“Going to change the game” #
Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple’s senior director of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apps and iCloud, called it “our most exciting update since the launch of Apple Creator Studio”, and singled out the assistants:
The assistant capabilities in Logic Pro, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are going to change the game for how people interact with and learn to use these apps.

Who can get it, and where #
The update reaches the App Store in November, free for existing Creator Studio subscribers; Apple hasn’t given a date. The free versions of Keynote, Pages and Numbers stay, but the assistants are for subscribers. According to Apple’s footnotes:
- Keynote, Pages and Numbers assistant (beta): an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, iPad or Mac running iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 or later, in US English only.
- Logic Pro assistant (beta): Mac only, on an Apple Intelligence-capable Mac running macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, in US English only.
- MCP in Keynote, Pages and Numbers: Mac only, macOS 27 or later.
Apple’s notes list no country restrictions, only the US English requirement, and it hasn’t said when other languages will follow. That is narrower than Siri AI, which added five languages this week.
Creator Studio costs $12.99 a month or $129 a year in the US, with local prices set by each country’s App Store. New subscribers get a one-month free trial, and students and educators pay $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Why it matters #
Keynote, Pages and Numbers have trailed Microsoft 365 Copilot and Gemini in Google Workspace on built-in AI, and Apple is closing the gap with OpenAI’s help rather than on its own. Opening the apps to MCP may matter more: it lets the AI agents people already use, from any company, work directly in Apple’s documents.
