- AMD plans Zen 7-based EPYC processors codenamed Florence, Ferrara and Fidenza for 2028, followed by Zen 8-based Ravenna CPUs in 2030. AMD has extended its EPYC server processor roadmap through 2030, setting a 2028 target for three Zen 7-based products and confirming that a Zen 8 generation is in development.
The company named the 2028 CPUs Florence, Ferrara and Fidenza. Ravenna, based on Zen 8, is planned for 2030. AMD disclosed the roadmap during its Advancing AI event in San Francisco on July 23.[1]
The announcement establishes target dates and codenames rather than complete product specifications. AMD has not disclosed Zen 7 core counts, power envelopes or a specific manufacturing process. During the keynote, CEO Lisa Su said Florence would use leading-edge process technology, add AI compute extensions and support the latest memory technologies.[2]
AMD is splitting EPYC into more specialized products #
The roadmap follows the launch of AMD’s sixth-generation EPYC 9006 series, formerly codenamed Venice. The top EPYC 9996 model has 256 Zen 6 cores and 512 threads, while the wider portfolio includes high-frequency, high-cache and lower-power configurations for different server roles.[3]
Venice entered production ramp in Taiwan on TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer process in May. AMD said it intends to expand production to TSMC’s Arizona fabrication facility in the future. The company has not said whether its Zen 7 products will use an updated 2-nanometer process or a smaller node.[5]
AMD currently divides CPU demand in agentic AI infrastructure into three categories: high-density processors that execute and coordinate agents, high-frequency host CPUs that feed accelerators, and general-purpose processors that run databases, storage and other enterprise services.[3]
The three Zen 7 codenames suggest AMD intends to continue offering distinct server configurations, but the company has not assigned Florence and Fidenza to specific workload categories. It has confirmed that Ferrara will be paired with Instinct MI600 accelerators in the planned Helios 600 rack-scale system. The preceding Helios 500 design is set to use Instinct MI500 accelerators and EPYC Verano CPUs.[1]
AMD’s official investor release and presentation materials spell the third Zen 7 codename Fidenza. Some initial coverage called it Faenza, but that spelling does not match AMD’s published materials.[1][2]
A longer challenge to Intel #
The roadmap gives cloud providers and server manufacturers a view beyond Venice while Intel prepares future Xeon generations. AMD captured 33.2% of x86 server CPU shipments in the first quarter of 2026, according to Mercury Research figures reported by The Register. Separate Mercury data put AMD’s share of x86 server CPU revenue at 46.2%.[6]
Those figures exclude Arm from the denominator. A broader UBS estimate that includes Arm put first-quarter server CPU unit share at 54.9% for Intel, 27.4% for AMD and 17.7% for Arm-based processors. UBS analysts led by Timothy Arcuri said AMD and Arm had both gained share over the preceding year, while expecting Intel’s roadmap to become more competitive with its planned Coral Rapids lineup.[4]
AMD’s 2028 schedule does not establish how Florence, Ferrara and Fidenza will compare with Intel processors available at that time. It does show that AMD plans to carry the product segmentation introduced with Venice into another architecture generation rather than address the server market with a single configuration.
Arm complicates the AI infrastructure contest #
AMD and Intel also face Arm-based processors from Nvidia, cloud providers and Arm itself. IDC reported that non-x86 systems generated $58.7 billion, or 47.9%, of the server market’s $122.6 billion in first-quarter revenue.[7]
That figure is system revenue, not CPU revenue or processor unit share. It is also inflated by the value of accelerator-rich AI systems and should not be read as a direct measure of Arm CPU adoption. IDC reported that GPU-accelerated servers alone generated $68.9 billion during the quarter.[7]
The shift toward rack-scale AI systems explains AMD’s emphasis on selling CPUs alongside Instinct accelerators, Pensando networking and ROCm software. Its current Helios design combines 72 MI455X GPUs with 18 Venice CPUs, while the roadmap assigns Ferrara a similar host role in the 2028 Helios 600 generation.[1]
Morningstar analyst Brian Colello has argued that agentic AI can expand CPU demand because processors must orchestrate agents and connect GPU systems with traditional data-center infrastructure. That demand could benefit multiple suppliers: AMD through EPYC, Intel through its installed x86 base and Arm vendors through custom and rack-scale platforms.[8]
The roadmap remains largely forward-looking. Florence, Ferrara and Fidenza have confirmed codenames, an architecture and a 2028 target; Ravenna has a Zen 8 designation and a 2030 target. Their manufacturing processes, core configurations, prices and customer deployments remain undisclosed.
