AMD FSR SDK 2.4 Brings ML Upscaling to RX 6000 Series and Ryzen APUs

AMD released the FSR "Redstone" SDK 2.4, extending ML-based FSR Upscaling 4.1 to Radeon RX 6000 Series (RDNA 2) discrete GPUs and, for the first time, to select Ryzen processors with integrated Radeon graphics. The SDK adds Vulkan support at feature parity with DirectX 12 for FSR Upscaling and FSR Frame Generation (except Intel PresentMon reporting), Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing for Frame Generation on Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs, and standalone ambient and specular occlusion denoising in FSR Ray Regeneration. Model selection is automatic: Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 Series chips with Radeon 8000S graphics run the full INT8 model, while other listed Ryzen processors run a lightweight INT8 model less than half the size, built for constrained integrated graphics in laptops and handhelds.

AMD FSR SDK

AMD FSR™ SDK v2.4 is the launchpad for our ML-based FSR "Redstone" rendering technologies, inc. AMD FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, and Radiance Caching.

Neural rendering is transforming real-time graphics, and the AMD FSR™ “Redstone” SDK puts these capabilities directly in your hands. It combines machine learning (ML) with analytical fallback techniques to unlock new possibilities in upscaling, frame generation, ray tracing denoising, and lighting. By integrating AMD FSR features into your games, you can deliver enhanced performance and visual quality that scales across the AMD ecosystem, from handheld gaming devices and laptops to game consoles and desktop PCs, with a common SDK integration. AMD FSR SDK 2.4 extends that reach to more of your players, on more of the devices they play on.

Today, we’re releasing AMD FSR “Redstone” SDK 2.4. In June, we extended ML-based AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 to AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series GPUs. With this release, it now also runs on AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series (AMD RDNA™ 2 architecture) discrete GPUs, so more of your players on earlier-generation Radeon graphics cards will see its significant improvements in image quality. For the first time, FSR Upscaling 4.1 also comes to select AMD Ryzen™ processors with integrated Radeon graphics, found in gaming laptops, mini-PCs, and handheld gaming devices. AMD Ryzen AI Max processors run the full ML model, and a new lightweight model, built for more constrained integrated graphics, brings ML-based upscaling to thin-and-light laptops and handhelds.

The FSR SDK 2.4 also adds Vulkan® support at feature parity with DirectX® 12 for AMD FSR Upscaling and FSR Frame Generation (except for Intel® PresentMon reporting). FSR Frame Generation gains Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing on AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs, and AMD FSR Ray Regeneration adds standalone ambient and specular occlusion denoising.

AMD FSR™ Upscaling is our ML-powered upscaler. It uses neural networks to reconstruct visuals from lower-resolution frames, delivering a substantial boost in game performance together with the image quality improvements of AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 keeps the models already shipping on AMD Radeon™ RX 9000 Series (AMD RDNA™ 4 architecture, full FP8) and Radeon RX 7000 Series discrete (RDNA 3 architecture, full INT8) GPUs, and adds the full INT8 model on:

A second, highly optimized INT8 model brings ML-based FSR Upscaling to more constrained integrated graphics. That model is less than half the size of the full INT8 model and is purpose-built for this class of hardware:

Model selection is automatic and based on the target hardware. More capable integrated AMD Radeon 8000S Series GPUs in the Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 Series run the full INT8 model. The other AMD Ryzen processors listed above run the lightweight INT8 model, tuned for a balance of image reconstruction quality and performance on laptops and handhelds. Results vary by game, resolution, quality mode, and hardware. AMD has focused on delivering a stable, broadly useful solution across all supported platforms.

Because integrated GPUs share system memory, APU upscaling performance can be affected by memory bandwidth as well as the processor’s power and thermal configuration. Reference timings for discrete GPUs and these Ryzen processors are available on the AMD FSR Upscaling product page.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 also adds Vulkan® support at feature parity with the DirectX® 12 version. New APU support and Vulkan support are provided by the SDK DLLs you ship with your game, and do not require a specific driver version.

The AMD FSR™ SDK 2.4 is the first FSR “Redstone” release with Vulkan® support at feature parity with DirectX® 12 for the upscaling and frame generation effects:

Vulkan support is provided by the FSR SDK 2.4 DLLs, so it requires integrating this SDK into your game. Existing Vulkan games with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 upscaling or frame generation are not automatically upgraded to ML-based FSR Upscaling or FSR Frame Generation through the driver, as those upgrades apply to DirectX 12 games only. Vulkan games that integrate AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2, FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2, or FSR Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0 or later are eligible for automatic upgrades to future versions through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™.

On Vulkan, the frame generation swapchain replaces the application’s VkSwapchainKHR and returns replacement function pointers for swapchain creation, image acquire, and present.

Samples in this SDK run on Vulkan 1.2. AMD FSR Ray Regeneration and AMD FSR Radiance Caching remain DirectX 12 effects in this release.

AMD FSR™ Frame Generation generates intermediate frames so gameplay can be presented at a higher visual frame rate. The swapchain implementation dispatches that work and paces presentation. On DirectX® 12 it implements IDXGISwapChain4. On Vulkan® it replaces VkSwapchainKHR.

Starting with Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0, final presentation timing can be delegated to the AMD display driver. Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing schedules the present closer to the display pipeline than a user-mode busy wait, which produces smoother frame delivery and lower CPU overhead. It is selected automatically when all of the following are met, and your game does not need to opt in:

OverrideSwapChainDX12 set to true. When any of those requirements is unmet, the swapchain continues to use its existing pacing path. For the best experience we recommend Windows® 11 with Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling enabled. That is the configuration Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing is validated against. Pacing quality on other operating system and scheduling configurations can fall back to the existing pacing path. Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing is supported on both DirectX 12 and Vulkan.

Eligible games integrated with AMD FSR SDK 2.1 or later, or with AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution Frame Generation (Swapchain) 3.1.6 or later, may receive FSR Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0 through automatic driver override when the title uses the supported swapchain-presentation path and has not disabled the override. On other GPUs, the AMD FSR API uses FidelityFX Super Resolution Frame Generation (Swapchain) 3.1.7.

Note: Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing applies when frame generation is dispatched during swapchain presentation. If the AMD FSR Unreal Engine plugin is configured to dispatch frame generation manually, it will keep the existing pacing path.

On DirectX 12, Swapchain 4.0.0 also reports the type of each presented frame so performance tools built on Intel® PresentMon can distinguish generated frames from application-rendered frames. Reporting is set up when the swapchain context is created and needs no application changes. Current Intel PresentMon releases report these frames as Unknown. Intel PresentMon integration is DirectX 12 only.

AMD FSR™ Frame Generation is the ML frame generation provider for AMD Radeon™ RX 9000 Series GPUs and later. This update adds Vulkan® support at feature parity with DirectX® 12 and fixes Vulkan validation errors and swapchain ABI safety issues.

AMD FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2 still requires Windows® 11. The call order is mandatory: ffxConfigure with ffxConfigureDescFrameGeneration, then ffxDispatch with ffxDispatchDescFrameGenerationPrepareV2, then ffxDispatch with ffxDispatchDescFrameGeneration. Calling these out of order can produce incorrect rendering and blocks future automatic driver upgrades.

AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3.1.6 is the analytical upscaler used where ML-based AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 is unavailable. The 3.1.6 update increases precision and refines reprojection in the accumulate pass and adds Vulkan® support at feature parity with DirectX® 12.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution Frame Generation 3.1.6 and Frame Generation (Swapchain) 3.1.7 also gain Vulkan support at feature parity with their DirectX 12 versions. Swapchain 3.1.7 remains the version the API selects when Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0’s AMD Radeon™ RX 9000 Series GPU requirement is unmet.

AMD FSR™ Ray Regeneration is an ML denoiser for ray-traced workloads on AMD Radeon™ RX 9000 Series GPUs and later. Version 1.2.1 supports standalone ambient occlusion denoising and standalone specular occlusion denoising.

The update also corrects GPU memory usage queries. Querying memory usage after context creation now returns the right figure and querying it before context creation includes shader-visible descriptors. FFX_DENOISER_DISPATCH_NON_ENCODED_ALBEDO is added as an alias for FFX_DENOISER_DISPATCH_NON_GAMMA_ALBEDO. The FFX_DENOISER_DISPATCH_NON_GAMMA_ALBEDO name is deprecated and will be removed in a future release.

A few and driver behaviors change for every effect:

ffxConfigureDescGlobalDebug1 is deprecated. Use ffxConfigureDescGlobalDebug instead. Driver-provided effect versions remain available through ffxQueryDescGetVersions. A driver-provided entry has a trailing * on its version name, for example FSR 4.1.2 *, and bit 31 set on its version id. When the application does not supply ffxOverrideVersion, the API selects the newest implementation and prefers a driver-provided version only when that version is strictly higher than the newest version shipped with the application. Supplying ffxOverrideVersion pins the context to that exact version id.

The AMD FSR™ “Redstone” SDK 2.4 is available now. With a single integration, ML-based AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 now runs on AMD Radeon™ RX 9000, 7000, and 6000 Series (AMD RDNA™ 4, RDNA 3, and RDNA 2 architecture) discrete GPUs and on select AMD Ryzen™ processors (see Requirements section below). On AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series GPUs, the SDK also delivers FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2, FSR Frame Generation (Swapchain) 4.0.0 with Driver-Assisted Frame Pacing, and FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2.1. Analytical fallbacks remain available for other GPUs, and FSR upscaling and frame generation now support Vulkan® at parity with DirectX® 12.
