AMD CEO Lisa Su isn't worried about an AI house of cards

AMD CEO Lisa Su dismissed concerns about a potential AI industry bubble, arguing that the intertwined ecosystem of tech companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and OpenAI, is necessary for large-scale investments and long-term efficiency. AMD announced a deal with Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 GPUs starting in 2027, with AMD committing up to $5 billion in Anthropic, and also inked agreements with OpenAI for 6 gigawatts of GPUs and with Meta for similar infrastructure.

The artificial intelligence revolution has created a dizzying array of tech industry tie-ups.

To name a few, Nvidia (NVDA) took stakes in numerous upstart AI companies, Microsoft (MSFT) and OpenAI (OPAI.PVT) formed a legendary marriage, and hyperscaler cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure sold Nvidia chip-powered infrastructure while simultaneously building their own custom silicon.

While the circular dealmaking has made some AI industry watchers cautious, AMD (AMD) chair and CEO Lisa Su explained that the tech companies' close proximity to one another makes a lot of sense. "I think it's an ecosystem where we're working on this together, and in some sense, I think we are probably more aligned than we've ever been, which is actually a really good thing," Su told Yahoo Finance (video above). "When I say aligned, it's because these are such large investments over time. The more we know about what our customers need, the better prepared we can be for that moment."

"The AI world is such that you need every part of the ecosystem to come together, Su added. "And so the fact that the ecosystem is intertwined is the way it should be, it's actually going to make us more efficient long term."

Su has become a major player on the partnership front.

AMD announced a big tie-up with Anthropic (ANTH.PVT) this week that significantly expands its push to challenge rival Nvidia in the AI infrastructure market.

Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's next-generation Instinct MI450 GPUs in AMD's new Helios AI rack systems beginning in the first half of 2027 — a deal that could be worth tens of billions of dollars over time. AMD also committed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, marking one of the chipmaker's largest strategic investments ever.

The two companies will work together to optimize Anthropic's Claude AI models for AMD hardware and accelerate development of AMD's ROCm software platform.

AMD also inked a deal with OpenAI in October 2025 for 6 gigawatts of GPUs. It issued warrants to OpenAI for up to 160 million shares, and a similar deal was signed with Meta (META) in February of this year.

With both of those deals, AMD has committed about 20% of the company to OpenAI and Meta.
