Amazon Overhauls AI Strategy, Phasing Out Select Nova Models to Focus on Next-Gen Frontier Tech: Report

Amazon.com Inc. is phasing out most of its flagship Nova AI models, including Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas, to concentrate resources on a single frontier-model initiative led by researcher Pieter Abbeel, according to a Business Insider report. Amazon.com Inc. is overhauling its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy: It is phasing out a majority of its flagship in-house AI models to concentrate resources on a high-stakes frontier-model initiative, according to a report by Business Insider.

The e-commerce and cloud computing giant has begun deprecating several offerings within its Nova AI lineup. The cutbacks affect top-tier systems, including the Premier and Omni models, the Reel video generator, and the Canvas image-generation tool.

In their place, Amazon is redirecting talent and computing capacity toward a single frontier-model effort led by prominent AI researcher Pieter Abbeel. Advanced frontier research has reportedly become a top priority for the company this year, with the new flagship model expected to make its debut at Amazon’s annual re:Invent conference in December.

The strategic pivot comes just days after Amazon eliminated jobs within its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division. Addressing the shifts, an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters that the company routinely evolves its portfolio based on customer needs.

“We’re continuing to invest in and support the Nova models our customers rely on today,” the spokesperson said, noting that the company is simultaneously “investing in the next generation of frontier model research.”

The consolidation underscores Amazon’s effort to keep pace in a rapidly escalating AI race. While competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have captured public attention with high-profile generative models, Amazon has historically leaned into providing underlying cloud infrastructure through Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Despite the scaling back of individual models, Amazon is not abandoning the Nova ecosystem entirely. The company will continue to support select offerings, including its Nova 2 Lite and Nova 2 Sonic models, as well as Nova Forge, a service that allows corporate clients to build custom AI applications. Reports indicate the upcoming frontier model may also launch under the Nova banner.

Amazon’s AGI division has experienced significant organizational shifts since its inception in 2023. Cloud veteran Peter DeSantis assumed leadership of the consolidated unit in December following the departure of several key executives over the past year.

The realignment reflects a broader trend across the tech sector, where major firms are streamlining fragmented AI projects to focus capital on scalable, high-performance foundation models capable of complex reasoning and multi-modal tasks.
