The web3 infrastructure firm's AgentPay middleware connects AI agents to traditional payment rails through a single integration point
Alchemy, the company often described as the “AWS of Web3,” has plugged its new AI payment middleware directly into Visa’s agent commerce infrastructure. The product, called AgentPay, lets AI agents conduct transactions across traditional payment networks without requiring merchants to build custom integrations for each one.
What AgentPay actually does #
Merchants register their existing APIs once and get access to a single endpoint that works across multiple payment protocols. Instead of building separate plumbing for Visa, Coinbase, Stripe, Circle, and whatever comes next, merchants plug into Alchemy’s layer and let it handle the routing. The platform is protocol-agnostic, meaning it doesn’t care whether the transaction runs on traditional rails or blockchain-based systems.
One critical distinction: Alchemy doesn’t touch the money. The company operates purely as a translation layer, routing instructions between AI agents and payment processors without ever holding or moving funds directly.
AgentPay launched in April 2026 and moved into open beta by late April, supporting Visa’s infrastructure alongside related systems like Visa’s Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) and x402. The integration with major players like Coinbase, Stripe, and Circle means the platform already connects to a significant portion of both crypto-native and traditional payment volume.
Why Visa cares about AI agents #
Visa’s involvement here isn’t charity. The card network has been building out its own intelligent commerce initiative, developing infrastructure specifically designed for a world where AI systems, not just people, initiate and authorize payments. The Machine Payments Protocol is Visa’s answer to a question most consumers haven’t thought to ask yet: what happens when your AI assistant needs a credit card?
Alchemy’s AgentPay slots into this vision by solving the merchant side of the equation. Visa builds the rails for AI payments. Alchemy makes it easy for businesses to actually accept them without rearchitecting their entire checkout flow.
The company currently serves over 100 blockchains, which gives it an unusual vantage point at the intersection of decentralized and traditional finance.
What this means for investors #
Industry estimates suggest agent-based transactions could eventually reach hundreds of billions of dollars.
The risk calculus for merchants is relatively straightforward. Integrating with a single endpoint that covers multiple payment protocols reduces engineering overhead and future-proofs against whichever payment method wins the agent commerce race.
Alchemy doesn’t handle funds directly, which means its revenue model likely depends on API calls, transaction volume fees, or platform subscriptions rather than interchange.
