AI made the cheap part of my job free

A web developer argues that AI website builders have commoditized page creation but not conversion strategy, citing Precedence Research's $6.3 billion AI website builder market and Hostinger data showing 93% of its AI site builder users are building a website for the first time. The developer contends that the real value now lies in the judgment and experience behind sites that turn visitors into customers, not in generating layouts.

Let me explain, because the numbers tell a story most people are reading backwards. According to Precedence Research, 67% of business owners now say they’d rather build their website with AI than hire anyone. If you sell websites for a living, that stat should scare you. It doesn’t scare me.

First, the market is real. The AI website builder market hit $6.3 billion in 2026 (Precedence Research), and a U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Teneo survey found 98% of small businesses now use AI-enabled tools. This isn’t a trend, it’s the new default.

But look one layer deeper. Hostinger reports that 93% of people using its AI site builder are building their first website ever. No prior site. No previous designer. These aren’t clients leaving professionals, they’re people who were never going to hire one. AI didn’t take that work, it created a whole new tier of the market.

And a website is now table stakes: Network Solutions data shows 83% of small businesses have one, up from 64% in 2018. Everyone has a site. That’s exactly the problem.

Because here’s what AI actually commoditized: making a page. Type a prompt, get a layout, publish. That part is genuinely free now, and that’s fine.

Here’s what it did NOT commoditize: making a page that makes money.

ConversionXL found that 68% of website visitors leave without taking a single action. Not because they’re uninterested, but because the site failed to guide them. A pretty page that converts nobody is just a fast way to lose customers.

One documented case stuck with me: an agency reported that a US home services business swapped a template site for a properly structured one. Same keywords. Same ad spend. Inbound calls doubled in 90 days. Nothing changed but the strategy underneath.

That’s the gap. AI generates a site in 30 seconds that looks fine and converts no one, because a website’s job was never to exist. It’s to turn a stranger into a customer.

So AI made the building free. Which means it made everything else more valuable.

The decision of what to build and why. The experience of knowing what converts because you’ve watched it work and fail a hundred times over. That’s the part no prompt can generate.

I don’t sell websites anymore. Anyone can get one of those for free in 30 seconds. I sell the judgment that decides what goes on the page, and the experience that knows why it’ll work.

That was always the actual job. AI just made it obvious.
