AI boom drives an 80% surge in foreign investment bids for Thailand

Foreign investment applications in Thailand surged 80% to 1.37tn baht ($40.6bn) in the first half of 2026, driven by digital projects including AI and data centres that accounted for 1.12tn baht, the Board of Investment reported Thursday. The approved projects are expected to create over 82,000 jobs and generate annual exports above 1.24tn baht, though applications do not guarantee spending and power constraints remain a challenge.

Thailand does not usually feature in the story of the AI boom. This year it does. Foreign firms applied to invest 1.37tn baht, about $40.6bn, in the first six months of 2026, the country’s Board of Investment said on Thursday. That is up 80% on a year earlier.

One sector explains most of it. Digital projects, chiefly AI and data centres, drew 1.12tn baht, more than three-quarters of all applications, Bloomberg reported. Across all industries the board logged 1,299 bids, with foreign money targeting 877 projects.

The numbers describe a shift bigger than one country’s ledger. The world’s hyperscalers are hunting for land, power, and permits, and Southeast Asia keeps saying yes. Google, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft have all announced cloud build-outs in the country. In May the board waved through TikTok’s 842bn-baht data-infrastructure expansion.

What the money is really buying #

For Bangkok, the appeal is jobs and status. The approved projects should create more than 82,000 jobs, generate annual exports above 1.24tn baht, and consume 386bn baht of local materials a year, board secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said. “Investment value is not the only goal,” he added. “Real success means quality jobs, higher skills and better income for Thai workers.”

It also lands at a useful moment. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has promised to lift an economy trailing neighbours like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. War in the Middle East has pushed up energy costs, yet the money kept coming.

“Thailand’s investment growth held steady even as the world economy faced real turbulence,” Narit said, in figures also reported by TNGlobal.

The catch in the pipeline #

Two cautions sit under the headline. Applications are not spending, and the board notes not all will come to fruition. Data centres are also hungry for power, which Thailand, like everywhere hosting the regional build-out, will have to find.

Set against the giant projects planned elsewhere and the hundreds of billions China is spending at home, Thailand’s haul is modest. But the direction is unmistakable. The map of where AI physically lives is being redrawn, and Bangkok wants a corner of it.
