The Next.js app pairs a procedural Web Audio engine with a dark, low-blue-light interface and requires no cloud tracking, subscription keys, or internet connectivity.", "body_md": "*This is a submission for the [Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady](https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week3-2026-10-19)*\n\nIn celebration of International Sloth Day and the *Slow and Steady* theme, I built **ZenSloth** — a private, offline-first bedtime sleep companion and ambient narrative generator that invites you to slow down, conserve your energy, and do absolutely nothing.\n\nModern bedtime apps and AI tools are full of stimulation: subscription paywalls, notifications, cloud tracking, dopamine loops, and chatbots trying to solve problems. ZenSloth does the exact opposite. Channeling the unhurried spirit of a sloth, it creates a calming, low-stimulation cocoon for your mind:\n\nZenSloth lets you be as lazy as possible: pick a mood, tap once, close your eyes, and drift off to sleep.\n\nZenSloth is an offline-first companion designed to run privately and reliably on your own machine without third-party cloud tracking.\n\nClone the repository and spin up the containers:\n\n```\ngit clone https://github.com/AryanMohan818/ZenSloth.git\ncd ZenSloth\ndocker compose up -d\n```\n\nPull the lightweight open-weight model:\n\n```\ndocker exec -it zensloth-ollama ollama pull qwen2.5:1.5b\n```\n\nOpen [http://localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000) in your browser, lay back, and enjoy your wind-down session.\n\nThis is a [Next.js](https://nextjs.org) project bootstrapped with [`create-next-app`](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/cli/create-next-app).\n\nFirst, run the development server:\n\n```\nnpm run dev\n# or\nyarn dev\n# or\npnpm dev\n# or\nbun dev\n```\n\nOpen [http://localhost:3000](http://localhost:3000) with your browser to see the result.\n\nYou can start editing the page by modifying `app/page.tsx`. The page auto-updates as you edit the file.\n\nThis project uses [`next/font`](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/optimizing/fonts) to automatically optimize and load [Geist](https://vercel.com/font), a new font family for Vercel.\n\nTo learn more about Next.js, take a look at the following resources:\n\nYou can check out [the Next.js GitHub repository](https://github.com/vercel/next.js) - your feedback and contributions are welcome!\n\nThe easiest way to deploy your Next.js app is to use the [Vercel Platform](https://vercel.com/new?utm_medium=default-template&filter=next.js&utm_source=create-next-app&utm_campaign=create-next-app-readme) from the creators of Next.js.\n\nCheck out our [Next.js deployment documentation](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/deploying) for more…\n\nZenSloth is built entirely around an open-source, local-first stack designed for calm aesthetics, zero network latency, and complete privacy:\n\n`qwen2.5:1.5b`)\nBedtime apps shouldn't depend on cloud API rate limits, subscription keys, or internet connectivity. ZenSloth uses **Ollama** running lightweight open-weight models (defaulting to `qwen2.5:1.5b`). \n\n`/api/generate`) leverages `ReadableStream` to stream tokens directly from Ollama to the browser in real-time, giving listeners an immediate, flowing experience without waiting for full generation.\nInstead of bundling heavy MP3 assets or streaming audio over Wi-Fi, ZenSloth includes a custom procedural audio engine built on the native **Web Audio API**:\n\n`#07080b`), soft amber/stone hues, and blur filters to minimize blue light before sleep.\nYour bedroom is your most personal, private space. When you tell a sleep app about the anxiety keeping you awake, your racing thoughts, or your bedtime routine, that data shouldn't be packaged into an advertising profile or logged on proprietary cloud servers.\n\nOpen innovation made ZenSloth possible in ways closed APIs never could:\n\nBuilding bedtime routines usually feels like work: searching for a meditation podcast, adjusting white noise playlists, skipping mid-roll ads, or staring at bright screens trying to decide what to listen to.\n\nZenSloth reduces all of that friction to **zero effort**:\n\n`gemma2:2b`)", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing", "canonical_source": "https://dev.to/aryan_mohan_71c9984118936/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing-3fke", "published_at": "2026-10-25 13:01:18+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-10-25 13:13:15.151389+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "large-language-models", "ai-tools", "generative-ai"], "entities": ["ZenSloth", "Ollama", "Qwen", "Next.js", "Web Audio API", "Hacktoberfest", "Vercel", "GitHub"], "also_reported_by": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/zensloth-an-offline-first-bedtime-companion-built-for-the-art-of-doing-nothing.jsonld"}}
