The price of Zcash ($ZEC) has reached an eight-year high, climbing to the $836–$857 range during a months-long rally. The asset has risen more than fourfold since the beginning of the year, completing its breakout from a prolonged trading range.
The latest price acceleration coincided with Grayscale’s preparations to launch its spot Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca and the emergence of a new narrative directly linking the token’s value to the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
The main catalyst behind the discussion of why a privacy coin has become tied to the AI boom was a series of statements from Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Cameron Winklevoss directly linked the asset’s long-term prospects to technological progress: “If you are bullish on AI then you are bullish on Zcash. In the age of super intelligence, private money is essential.”
The logic behind this thesis is that the evolution of AI will lead to the complete automation of financial surveillance. In an environment where algorithms can instantly analyze public transactions, zero-knowledge tools such as zk-SNARKs, which conceal transaction details, are beginning to be viewed as a fundamental form of protection against AI-powered surveillance.
Tyler Winklevoss shifted the focus to the project’s tokenomics, noting that Zcash’s total supply is capped at 21 million coins — there are currently fewer whole units of $ZEC in circulation than there are dollar millionaires worldwide. He also noted that developers could use AI to audit and improve the security of the network’s code.
Zcash ETF is expected to launch today, but what market risks remain? #
The second tangible driver accelerating Zcash’s move toward an eight-year high has been Grayscale’s conversion of its Zcash Trust into a spot ETF. The registration statement became effective on Aug. 24, and the fund is expected to begin trading on NYSE Arca today, Aug. 25, under the ticker ZCSH.
The trust has also been renamed The Zcash ETF. Grayscale intends to use 100% of the sponsor fees received from the fund for up to 12 months following the registration statement’s effective date to market the ETF and support initiatives related to the development, marketing and education of the Zcash network.
Despite the strong news backdrop, current market data points to risks of heightened volatility. The $ZEC rally has been driven largely by the derivatives market - futures trading volume has reached $4.55 billion, while spot market volume stands at only $553 million. Such an imbalance means that the price is being driven by large leveraged positions, increasing the risk of sudden liquidations.
Another factor restraining institutional optimism is the global pressure from AML authorities on all privacy-focused assets.
