YouTube’s chat-style search experiment is coming to mobile devices

Google is expanding its 'Ask YouTube' conversational search experiment to the YouTube mobile app, adding an 'Ask' button to the search bar for signed-in users aged 13 and older. The feature, which debuted on desktop on April 27, 2026, lets users ask questions conversationally and receive answers with relevant videos, and is currently available in the US on desktop, TV, and mobile, with plans for broader rollout.

  • YouTube is extending the “Ask YouTube” experiment to mobile devices.
  • You’ll need to go into the app and tap on “Ask” in the search bar to use the feature.
  • It will only be available to signed-in users who are 13 and above.

Searching for content in the YouTube mobile app is about to get more conversational. YouTube is expanding an experiment it launched back in April to mobile devices.

Google has announced that it is rolling out the “Ask YouTube” feature to the YouTube mobile app. If you’re unfamiliar with the tool, it made its debut as an experiment on desktop on April 27, 2026. This experiment adds an “Ask YouTube” button to the search bar, which you can click on to bring up a conversational search experience to dive deeper into topics. It works similarly to asking Google’s AI questions in the Gemini app.

With this expansion, you’ll now find an “Ask” button sitting in the search bar on the mobile app. Tapping on the button will let you ask questions conversationally, just as you would on the desktop version. For example, by asking “plan a three-day road trip between San Francisco to Santa Barbara,” you’ll be served an itinerary accompanied by relevant videos, rather than just a list of videos.

Google says that you’ll only have access to the experiment if you’re signed in. You’ll also need to be 13-years-old or older. Ask YouTube is currently available on desktop, TV, and mobile devices in the US. However, the company says it plans to bring the feature to more areas and in more languages in the future.
