Google's video platform rolls out a Gemini-powered chat interface that lets creators edit videos through natural language commands
YouTube just made video editing feel a lot more like texting a friend. The platform unveiled a new conversational editing assistant, powered by its Gemini AI model, that lets creators trim clips, reorder frames, and sync music simply by typing what they want in a chat interface.
The tool, announced during YouTube’s annual Made on YouTube event on September 23, integrates directly into Shorts and the YouTube Create app. Instead of wrestling with timelines and keyframes, creators can now describe their edits in plain English and let the AI generate a first draft.
How the tool actually works #
The conversational interface allows creators to interact with Gemini through natural language prompts. Want to trim the first three seconds of a clip? Just say so. Need the music to hit on a specific beat? Type the instruction and the AI handles the sync.
The system can generate initial rough cuts from raw footage, reorder sequences based on narrative direction, and handle the kind of repetitive editing tasks that typically eat hours of a creator’s day.
This isn’t YouTube’s first foray into AI-assisted editing. The platform launched an “Edit with AI” function in 2025 that handled more basic tasks. The new conversational tool is a significant step up, moving from preset AI actions to something closer to an actual dialogue with your editing software.
Alongside the editing assistant, YouTube also rolled out A/B testing capabilities for video cuts and improved AI-powered comment moderation.

The numbers behind AI adoption #
YouTube’s bet on AI editing tools isn’t happening in a vacuum. Hundreds of thousands of channels were already using the platform’s previous Gemini-powered features on a daily basis by August 2026.
A report from August 2026 found that 72% of US video creators aged 14 to 44 had used AI for editing or content creation within the previous year. Nearly three out of four young creators are already comfortable handing parts of their workflow to machines.
What this means for the creator economy #
YouTube’s parent company, Google, has poured enormous resources into Gemini. Embedding that model into the editing workflow of millions of creators is one of the most practical applications imaginable.
For individual creators, especially smaller channels without budgets for professional editors, the impact could be substantial. The gap between a creator with a $50,000 production budget and one working from a bedroom has been steadily narrowing for years. With 72% of young creators already using AI in their workflows, the question isn’t whether conversational editing becomes standard practice. It’s how quickly it does.
