Let's map the layers.”**\n\nThat is what this article does.\n\nMore importantly, it gives you a repeatable way to run the same investigation on **your own website**.\n\nA website does not have one visibility score in the real world.\n\nIt has a sequence of states:\n\n```\nACCESS\n  ↓\nCRAWL\n  ↓\nDISCOVER\n  ↓\nINDEX\n  ↓\nRETRIEVE\n  ↓\nSURFACE\n  ↓\nCITE\n  ↓\nCLICK\n  ↓\nTRUST\n  ↓\nCONVERT\n  ↓\nVERIFY\n  ↓\nMONITOR\n```\n\nA page can succeed at one layer and fail at another.\n\n**AuditMe's September 2026 data demonstrates the point:**\n\nGoogle defines an impression as a result shown to a user in Search and a click as a user clicking a link from Google Search. A citation event is not automatically a person, a click, a signup, or revenue.\n\nThe practical strategy is therefore not “optimize for Google” and then separately “hack ChatGPT.”\n\nIt is to build documents that are:\n\nGoogle's current guidance says the same foundational SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features and that there are no additional technical requirements or special AI schema required specifically to appear in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. It is not the same thing as 116,181 people reading your homepage. Make the page clearer and let the markup describe it.**\n\nStructured data can make content eligible for some search features.\n\nIt does not guarantee that a search feature will appear.\n\nThat distinction should appear in technical writing because it prevents a large amount of bad SEO advice.\n\nAI systems add more names to the crawler conversation.\n\nThat makes it more important to be precise.\n\nOpenAI's current publisher/developer documentation says public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and specifically discusses **OAI-SearchBot** for content discovery, surfacing and citations.
