Yosemite National Park will use part of this grant to “design unified, park-wide system that integrates real-time data on traffic, parking, and road conditions into automated, multichannel visitor information.” The sophisticated high-tech system is expected to have smart cameras and sensors along the roads and parking lots that would count cars and track traffic as it happens. Then, AI will be a smart brain that analyzes all this information at once—predicting where traffic jams will happen and how long wait times will be. The foundation received more than 200 proposals. Of which, 18 projects will have immediate funding for projects on “real-time information and traffic management, connectivity and data-informed decision-making.” More than half a dozen of projects in the inaugural cohort will be implemented across California with a focus heavily on upgrading digital infrastructure, real-time traffic management and environmental sustainability. Sequoia Parks Conservancy has also been named as the grant recipient and its project will solve connectivity gaps and congestion at entrance stations at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks by “deploying connectivity infrastructure and traffic counters.” Muir Woods National Monument in California’s Marin County is getting fiber internet and upgrades to the entrance gateway to enable “digital fee collection, reservations, new visitor services and more reliable emergency and operational communication.” Point Reyes National Seashore – which has porous borders without dedicated entry gates – will work with Pennsylvania State University to analyze available cell phone data to help park managers make more informed decisions about operations, staffing, resource protection and visitor services. The Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will be converted into a fully connected park with the help of an integrated data dashboard. An onsite waste incineration system to safely handle human waste without disturbing fragile island ecosystems will be installed at the Channel Islands National Park.
