By revenue it is still fifth, and the gap between those two facts is the whole story.*\n\nYangtze Memory Technologies shipped 14% of the world’s NAND flash in the second quarter of 2026, enough to knock Kioxia out of the global top three for the first time. Samsung held the lead at 25% of bit shipments and SK hynix took 22%, while YMTC climbed into third on a 22% year-over-year jump in volume, [according to research reported by Tom’s Hardware](https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/ymtc-breaks-into-the-top-three-nand-makers-for-the-first-time).\n\nNow the awkward part. By revenue, YMTC sits in fifth place, behind both Micron and the Kioxia it just overtook on volume. It is moving an enormous quantity of flash and earning relatively little per bit, because nearly all of it is consumer-grade: client SSDs, phone storage, memory cards. The money in this market has gone somewhere else entirely.\n\n## Almost half the world’s flash is going straight into servers\n\nEnterprise SSDs absorbed 48% of every NAND bit shipped last quarter, up from roughly 26% a year earlier. Twelve months is a very short time for half a global industry’s output to change destination, and the cause is not AI training — it is inference. Training runs are bandwidth-hungry and live on HBM. Inference at scale is different: it needs vast amounts of data sitting close to the accelerator, readable fast and cheaply, which is exactly the job high-capacity enterprise SSDs do.\n\nThe vendors positioned for that did very well. SK hynix’s Solidigm arm posted a 40% quarter-on-quarter jump in shipments, and the companies with deep eSSD portfolios kept their revenue rankings even where they lost ground on raw volume. That is why the leaderboard reads differently depending on whether you count bits or dollars.\n\n## Why this shows up on your invoice\n\nNone of this is good news if you are buying storage for a PC. Fab capacity is finite, and every wafer redirected toward high-margin datacentre parts is a wafer not making the 2TB drive you wanted. That is the mechanism behind the price climbs enthusiasts have been eating all year, and it has not run out of momentum: TrendForce [expects NAND contract prices to rise another 10–15% quarter-on-quarter](https://www.trendforce.com/presscenter/news/20260703-13134.html) through the third quarter, on top of increases that were already brutal.\n\nYMTC breaking into the top three does not fix that either, tempting as the symmetry is. The company has been on the US Entity List since late 2022, which keeps it away from the leading-edge Western tooling it would need to scale aggressively, and a large share of its output is consumed inside China rather than landing on shelves in Europe or North America. It is a genuine third force in NAND by volume. It is not yet the pressure release valve the consumer market is waiting for.\n\nWhat the quarter really shows is how completely AI infrastructure has rewired a market that used to be driven by phones and PCs. Flash is now an AI component that occasionally gets sold to gamers, and the pricing reflects that.
