Yaad: The Open-Source AI Companion That Remembers Your Family's Story

A developer built Yaad, an open-source, privacy-first AI companion for aging family members that maintains a rolling six-day episodic memory vault so conversations reference recent routines, photos and chats rather than starting from scratch. The Python-based project runs locally on open-weight Gemma models, uses Pydantic v2 validation and OWASP security headers, and sends automated conversation summaries to a family Telegram group. The developer argues open-weight models allow full inspection of the agent pipeline and anti-hallucination grounding, keeping elders' data under family control.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine Yaad (meaning "Remembrance") is an open-source, privacy-first AI wellness and memory continuity companion designed for aging family members.

Imagine calling your grandmother every day. Usually, a regular AI chatbot treats every conversation like a blank slate, completely forgetting what she shared with you yesterday. But our elders' lives are rich with daily moments—watering garden plants, cooking a favorite dish, or chatting with an old friend.

Yaad changes that. Instead of forgetting yesterday, Yaad looks back at a rolling 6-day episodic memory vault. When Dadi logs in, Yaad remembers her recent routines and chats warmly, reads uploaded photos of prescriptions or meals using open-weight AI, and gently asks a joyful question like:

"How are those orange marigold saplings you planted with Rohan doing?"

It exercises her short-term memory naturally—like a loving family member—without ever feeling like a clinical test or a pop quiz. Behind the scenes, automated summaries are dispatched to the family's Telegram group chat.

python main.py to launch the responsive dark-mode web dashboard at http://localhost:8000. The repository is built with a lean, unbloated architecture (zero dead code, strict Pydantic v2 validation, and OWASP security headers):

main.py``/healthz). memory_agents.py``os.replace), and Graphify grounding. templates/index.html``gemma-3-27b-it / gemma-4-31b-it) graph.json knowledge graphs generated by Elder care and personal family histories require absolute data sovereignty, transparency, and trust. Closed, proprietary APIs treat user data as black boxes and prevent developers from tightly controlling system behavior and privacy boundaries.

Open-weight models like Gemma made it possible to run localized prompts, inspect every layer of the agent pipeline, and embed strict anti-hallucination groundings (Graphify). Open-source innovation transforms AI from a cold, distant corporate tool into a warm, customizable family sanctuary where we retain 100% control over our elders' memories and data privacy.

For aging parents and grandparents living independently, the greatest challenge isn't physical health alone—it's episodic memory fade and quiet isolation. Watching an elder's face light up when an AI companion remembers a tiny detail from three days ago—like a blooming flower or a phone call with an old friend—proves that technology can carry genuine empathy. Yaad keeps the human story alive.
