# XPeng starts IRON humanoid robot production as Tesla Optimus stalls

XPeng has switched on what it calls the world’s first automated production line for advanced humanoid robots, and its IRON robot walked off that line under its own power. The Chinese automaker says the line runs with more than 80% of its core processes automated.

It’s the clearest signal yet that IRON is headed for real manufacturing and not just stage demos. XPeng is targeting mass production by the end of 2026.

## From a viral stage demo to a real line

If IRON looks familiar, that’s because it went viral last November. We were at [XPeng’s AI Day](https://electrek.co/2025/11/05/xpeng-ai-day-new-ai-model-powering-robots-robotaxis-and-flying-cars/) when it was unveiled last year. The robot’s walk was so smooth that people accused XPeng of hiding a person in a costume. Engineers cut open its leg on stage to prove it wasn’t.

Now XPeng says it has moved from R&D prototypes to building the robot on an actual line in Guangzhou. It describes the setup as automotive-grade, borrowing the quality systems it uses to build electric cars and pointing them at a humanoid robot.

“The robot production lines were created from scratch with no precedent to follow,” He Xiaopeng, XPeng’s chairman and CEO, said. “Today’s step is small, but XPENG is building the production lines for an entirely new product category.”

He then clipped a staff badge onto IRON, a bit of theater meant to signal the robot is now on the payroll.

## What’s inside IRON

The spec sheet is genuinely impressive. IRON has 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand, wrapped in a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure that XPeng treats as both skin and safety feature.

The brains are three of XPeng’s in-house Turing AI chips, which the company says deliver up to 2,250 TOPS. That’s enough to run its Physical AI foundation model directly on the robot, so IRON can handle tasks without a human operator working it by remote. No teleoperation, in other words. That’s the claim, anyway.

These are the same specs XPeng detailed last month when its robotics arm [raised over $900 million at a $6.3 billion valuation](https://electrek.co/2026/08/24/xpeng-robotics-900m-iron-humanoid-robot-valuation/), the largest single private round in China’s embodied AI sector. IDG Capital led it, with Tencent and Alibaba joining. XPeng wants to be building more than 1,000 robots a month, on the way to a million a year by 2030.

The near-term plan is more modest. XPeng says mass production starts by the end of 2026, with the first robots going into its own stores and campuses before any commercial launch. Sales and deliveries in China and abroad aren’t scheduled until 2027.

## The Tesla comparison

Every humanoid robot conversation eventually comes back to Tesla, and this one is unflattering for Elon Musk.

Musk once predicted Tesla would build [roughly 10,000 Optimus robots in 2026](https://electrek.co/2026/04/22/tesla-optimus-production-fremont-model-sx-line/). In January, he admitted none of them were doing useful work yet. Optimus production at Fremont was only meant to start around now, output will be “quite slow,” and the long-promised V3 reveal keeps slipping. Tesla is still converting a car line. XPeng just turned one on.

But one robot walking off a line is not mass production, and XPeng’s promise that IRON’s per-unit gross margin will run “significantly higher” than its EVs is exactly that, a promise. The company hasn’t shipped a robot to a paying customer yet or proven usefulness at scale.

## Electrek’s Take

Humanoid robots are easy to demo and brutally hard to manufacture and make use with a generalized physical AI. Anyone can make one wave on stage. Building thousands of them, consistently, at a cost that makes sense is the wall Tesla keeps running into, and it’s the exact problem XPeng just took a real swing at with an automated, automotive-grade line.

So credit where it’s due. I’ve seen quite a few humanoid robots over the last few years, including the IRON up close, and I believe XPeng is leading the space.

He Xiaopeng called this “a small step,” and he’s right. Going from one unit walking off a line to real volume by the end of the year is a massive leap, and every single humanoid timeline in this industry has slipped, XPeng’s included. The specs are strong, and the money is real. Whether IRON does anything useful in those XPeng stores, or just stands there looking human, is the question that actually matters. We’ll know a lot more by December.
