The G9L was subjected to 6.74 million km of testing across 26 countries. I personally saw it testing in Munich. The extensive real-world testing has led to 3-year development cycles, which is longer than some competitors who rely more heavily on just simulations. In the fiercely competitive Chinese market, taking the time for real world verification was undoubtedly a challenge. However, it also means that the car will launch with bugs already worked out. However, the G9L is a little more curvaceous. While the 3100 mm wheelbase and 5120 mm length are longer than many 3-row SUVs, the G9L focuses on maximizing two rows of passengers. By not including the third row, the roofline can be optimized for design without impacting interior comfort. I wouldn’t call it “coupe-like” but it does seem a bit better proportioned than some competitors. Wheels range from 20” to 22” with Michelin tires and have staggered widths to balance handling and grip. If you couldn’t guess it already, those large wheels indicate that this SUV is intended for primarily on-road use. Up front, 480 LEDs create the lighting signature with a 6.4 m long light bar. Million-pixel projection headlights co-developed with Huawei can project symbols on the road to communicate with other vehicles. As intelligent driving systems increasingly take over, this ability to communicate becomes intriguing for the social aspect of driving in urban areas. Cars naturally do not have hands to signal to other drivers, so they will need to develop other ways to communicate. The headlights are adaptive with enough intelligence to prevent blinding light on the faces of people, while still illuminating their bodies. In addition, it can project video to watch movies, with audio from exterior speakers. Passenger doors are electric and incorporate millimeter-wave radar and torque sensors to avoid obstacles when opening and pinching while closing. Side steps also automatically deploy and the dual chamber air suspension lowers to let smaller people enter. Meanwhile 1.4 square meter projections light the ground around the doors for entry and exit. XPENG is also expanding their voice control capabilities, with conversational control of many vehicle functions, including navigation and intelligent driving. However, this voice control isn’t limited to the interior. Six exterior microphones let people interact with different zones of the car. This lets people open the doors, hatch and frunk on voice command. It also lets people summon the vehicle by voice to drive out of tight parking spaces, which could come in handy with such a large vehicle. The seats offer 91 sensors and 29 motors to automatically adapt to the driver using AI. The seats can adjust for changes in posture and even different clothing. On long drives, the massage function automatically engages. Both front and rear seats can simultaneously recline and extend into zero gravity position, which mimics the position that the human body naturally takes when floating in space. For passengers relaxing in zero gravity mode, the car adds an anti-submarining airbag to prevent people from sliding below the seatbelt and a shoulder belt upper mount in the seat. Meanwhile, passengers can access cold beverages from the 12.5l refrigerator developed with Midea. This system can cool in 9 minutes and offers a sterilization rate of 99.99%, which should be useful in a vehicle that does not run a refrigerator constantly. 33 speakers, including 25 main and 8 headrest speakers, can provide surround sound throughout the vehicle or enable different zones. This allows rear seat passengers to watch a movie while front seats listen to music. Meanwhile, active noise cancellation, double laminated glass and 122 pieces of damping material combine to eliminate unwanted noise. For the EREV version, the range extender adds just half a decibel when it comes on. The G9L has already scored 5 stars on every major global safety test outside of the US. However, as 5-star scores are becoming commonplace in China, XPENG created their more extreme tests. Using the same vehicle, they submerged it in water, hit the battery directly with a low obstacle, hit the car from multiple directions and flipped it. While they seemed to have needed to replace the 11 airbags between some of the dummy tests, the car still held up well and the doors still opened. XPENG claims the largest high-pressure castings and the stiffest chassis in its class contributed to these results. Then they removed the battery and subjected it to fire for an extended period. However, with all the active safety measures, people will be increasingly unlikely to need the passive safety measures. Four-wheel steering provides the G9L with a compact-like 5.4 m turning radius, which should help to maneuver around obstacles. Dual chamber air suspension should provide additional ground clearance when needed. However, when travelling through water is unavoidable, the vehicle also has two wading radar sensors and a wading depth of 700 mm. It is interesting that, while XPENG moved toward vision for their intelligent driving system, they still use radar for opening doors and when wading in water. In terms of performance 0-100 km/h takes 4.45s for the EV and 4.95s for the EREV. That acceleration is likely more than people need in a vehicle like this and faster than supercars from a few decades ago, even if it is not the absolute fastest EV now available in China. 702 km of range is offered in MAX trim, which has 270 kW 362 hp on the rear axle and a 91.9 kWh CALB LFP battery. 660 km of range is listed for the Ultra and Ultra SE, which uses the same battery but adds a 160 kW 215 hp electric motor to the front axle for 430 kW 577 hp combined. 755 km of range is offered in the Flagship Ultra trim, which uses a 110-kWh ternary CALB battery. Those ranges are helped by a 0.238 drag coefficient, which is better than a Prius. For the EREV, all versions offer AWD with 370 kW 496 hp of combined motor power. The 1.5l range extender does not connect to the wheels. 435 km of electric range comes from a CALB 63.3 kWh LFP battery, and the range extender takes the total to 1602 km of combined range. When the SUV needs to charge, a 5C charge rate can add 450 km of range in 9 minutes. While this may not be the absolute fastest charging speed in China, it is much faster than many current EV owners are used to. Fast enough to charge the vehicle while using the bathroom and buying a snack at a stop, but not so fast that you must choose between one or the other before having to unplug. Only a single presale price has been announced at 259,800 RMB $38,524 . However, we do not know exactly what specification that is for or what the final sales price will be. However, the EV now starts at 279,800 RMB with the top spec Flagship EV coming in at 359,800 RMB, significantly below the presale price. So, final prices could be significantly lower than the presale price. On the GX, the EREV is 10,000 RMB more expensive than the BEV, so we might see a similar pattern here. For comparison, the Model Y starts at 263,500 RMB in China, or 327,500 RMB when including Tesla Driver Assist. The AWD Long Range with Tesla Driver Assist takes it to 377,500 RMB. Beyond just the price, the G9L is significantly more of a vehicle with more advanced technology, so there is a clear value advantage. VLA 2.0 is about to receive its first major update, claiming a 15 times larger model size and 4 times the sensing capability compared to competitors. It also claims a long a temporal window supporting the past 30 seconds and predicting the next 6 seconds. In addition, generalization has improved across models and markets. While the full VLA 2.0 system is designed to be used with XPENGs Turing chips, XPENG will also be rolling out updates to their existing models with NVIDIA Orin chips to greatly improve their intelligent driving capabilities. However, we will have to wait for the future official launch event to learn more about the G9L. While we still do not have firm pricing within China, global prices will perhaps be even more interesting. The G9L seems targeted at the heart of the large SUV market that many premium legacy automakers count on for margins. It is hard to imagine people picking a Range Rover over a far more technologically advanced and better equipped G9L at a fraction of the price. It is also the type of vehicle that I could see selling well in the US, if politicians ever allowed people the freedom to choose a better EV at a more affordable price. As with everything, the details are what will really determine if the G9L is a success.
