Chinese President Xi Jinping is coming to Washington on September 24 — and the only question that matters is what America walks away with.
President Trump announced the visit Thursday during remarks at the EPA, framing artificial intelligence as the central prize. "Whoever wins that race is probably going to win, period," Trump said, calling AI "probably the biggest thing anybody's ever seen." The stakes are real: AI dominance will shape the next century of economic and military power. But summits don't win races — policy does.
"President Xi is coming over on September 24th," Trump told the audience. "We talked about it when I was over in Beijing, and we'll be talking about it again." Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke Wednesday to lay the groundwork. Rubio called it preparation for a "very positive visit," according to Fox News and Reuters.
Europe Says, which provided the most context, noted that Beijing has not yet officially confirmed the visit. Rubio, speaking to reporters in Manila after meeting Wang at an ASEAN summit, acknowledged the two countries have "significant differences" and said "our job is to sort of manage those so that they never get out of control." That's diplomat-speak for: no resolution, just containment.
Here's what the diplomatic niceties are papering over. Just days before Rubio's upbeat briefing, the U.S. condemned China's "dangerous" behavior after Chinese coast guard personnel clashed with Philippine sailors in the South China Sea, wounding one. Wang Yi told his Philippine counterpart that Manila — not Beijing — was "a source of disruption to regional peace and stability."
Then there's election interference. Trump last week accused China of hacking data in the 2020 election and denounced "shocking vulnerabilities" in the U.S. electoral system. Beijing denied it. And when pressed, Rubio told reporters he and Wang "had not discussed it." So the top American diplomat sat down with his Chinese counterpart and skipped the alleged attack on U.S. democracy — but came out promising a "very positive" visit.
Wang, for his part, urged the U.S. to "respect China's core interests" and complained about "a series of negative words and actions by the U.S. side," per China's foreign ministry. In diplomatic language, that's a bill of grievances — not a concession list.
The AI race is the stated reason for the sit-down, and it's a legitimate national priority. But the pattern is familiar: announce a summit, talk tough beforehand, deliver photo ops and vague commitments, leave the hard questions for later. Fox News ran a sidebar warning that "China is building an AI war machine" and Washington must "wake up before it's too late" — then covered the visit announcement straight. Reuters kept it flat and brief. Europe Says buried the election interference and South China Sea clashes deep, after paragraphs of diplomatic stage-setting.
Trump has boasted about his relationship with Xi. Relationships matter. But the American working class doesn't need another handshake — it needs to see what the handshake costs and what it buys. AI dominance, trade terms, election security, maritime aggression: these are the metrics. Everything else is theater.
