xAI’s Grok now available for Word and PowerPoint, undercutting Microsoft Copilot at zero cost

Elon Musk's xAI released free Grok AI add-ins for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, directly challenging Microsoft's $30/month Copilot. The add-ins, available since June 22, offer document drafting, slide generation, and data analysis with web research and cloud connectivity. This move intensifies the AI productivity software pricing war, potentially disrupting enterprise subscription models.

Elon Musk's AI company is giving away Office add-ins that rival Microsoft's $30/month Copilot, and the enterprise software pricing war just got interesting

xAI’s Grok AI is now available as a free add-in for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, directly challenging Microsoft’s own Copilot product that runs about $30 per month.

The rollout happened in stages: PowerPoint on June 16, Word on June 18, and Excel on June 22. All three are free for Microsoft 365 users.

What Grok actually does inside Office #

The add-ins let users do the things you’d expect from an AI assistant embedded in productivity software. In Word, Grok can draft structured documents. In PowerPoint, it generates slide decks from outlines. In Excel, it handles data analysis through natural language queries.

The integration also includes web research capabilities and connectivity to email, SharePoint, and Google Drive.

Elon Musk teased these plugins back in April following engineering demos during development.

The Copilot pricing problem #

Microsoft Copilot costs approximately $30 per month. Now there’s a free alternative sitting right inside the same applications.

The research notes there may be usage limits associated with higher-tier subscriptions, which could influence how businesses choose to integrate the Grok add-ins within their workflows.

Why crypto and tech investors should care #

The enterprise software subscription model is facing stress from AI-native competitors willing to sacrifice short-term revenue for distribution. The AI productivity wars have direct implications for how capital flows through the tech sector, affecting valuations and where speculative capital goes across AI tokens and infrastructure plays.
