landmarks.\n\nI don't want to spend half my trip rushing between “must-see” attractions.\n\nAnd I would happily spend $250 on one amazing dinner instead of visiting five popular tourist spots.\n\nThe itinerary isn't wrong.\n\n**It just isn't mine.**\n\nAnd I think this reveals one of the biggest challenges for AI travel.\n\nIt's knowing **how I make decisions**.\n\nFor a long time, personalization in travel has mostly meant collecting preferences.\n\nBeach or mountains?\n\nBudget or luxury?\n\nBusiness or leisure?\n\nWindow seat or aisle?\n\nBut human travel decisions are much messier than that.\n\nTwo people can have exactly the same destination, budget, and travel dates—and still want completely different trips.\n\nOne person might want to stay in the center because they want to walk everywhere.\n\nAnother might prefer a quiet neighborhood and take a taxi whenever necessary.\n\nOne traveler wants to see everything.\n\nAnother wants to do absolutely nothing before noon.\n\nOne person sees a $300 hotel as expensive.\n\nAnother sees it as a bargain if it means waking up next to the beach.\n\nThe difference isn't simply preference.\n\nIt's **trade-offs**.\n\nAnd that's where I think AI travel agents still have a lot to learn.\n\nIt's the one that understands your priorities.\n\nThink about what a great human travel agent does.\n\nYou tell them:\n\n“I'm going to Tokyo.”\n\nThey don't immediately send you a list of 20 hotels.\n\nThey ask questions.\n\n“Is this your first time?”\n\n“Are you traveling with kids?”\n\n“Do you care about nightlife?”\n\n“Do you mind taking public transportation?”\n\n“Would you rather save money on the hotel and spend more on food?”\n\nAnd sometimes they learn something even more important:\n\n“I know you said you want to visit five places, but based on how you usually travel, I think you'll hate that schedule.”\n\nThat's valuable.\n\nBecause travel isn't about finding the objectively “best” option.\n\nThere usually isn't one.\n\nIt's about finding the option that is **best for you**.\n\nToday, most AI travel experiences are still recommendation engines.\n\nAsk a question.\n\nGet an answer.\n\nAsk for a hotel.\n\nGet a list.\n\nAsk for an itinerary.\n\nGet a plan.\n\nBut agentic AI is changing the relationship.\n\nThe next generation of AI travel agents won't just tell you what to do.\n\nThey'll search, compare, make decisions, book hotels, arrange activities, and potentially manage the trip afterward.\n\nThat means the quality of the agent won't just depend on how well it can generate text.\n\nIt will depend on how well it can make decisions **on your behalf**.\n\nAnd that's a much harder problem.\n\nImagine an AI agent searching for hotels for me.\n\nThere might be 500 hotels that match my destination and budget.\n\nWhich one should it choose?\n\nThe cheapest?\n\nThe highest rated?\n\nThe closest to the station?\n\nThe most popular?\n\nThe hotel with the best cancellation policy?\n\nThere is no universally correct answer.\n\nThe right answer depends on **me**.\n\nIf the agent knows that I hate crowded areas, love food, sleep late, and don't mind paying more for convenience, its definition of “best hotel” changes completely.\n\nThis is why I think the future of AI travel won't be about generating more recommendations.\n\nIt will be about **understanding the person behind the request**.\n\nAn AI can create a beautiful itinerary in seconds.\n\nBut hotels have real-time availability.\n\nPrices change.\n\nRooms sell out.\n\nCancellation policies differ.\n\nRoom types matter.\n\nA recommendation that was perfect five minutes ago might no longer be bookable.\n\nThis creates a huge gap between:\n\n**“I found a great hotel for you.”**\n\nand\n\n**“I found a great hotel for you, and you can actually book it right now.”**\n\nFor an AI travel agent, that distinction is everything.\n\nBecause once AI starts making decisions rather than simply giving suggestions, access to reliable travel infrastructure becomes just as important as intelligence.\n\nA brilliant agent with outdated inventory isn't very useful.\n\nA personalized itinerary with no bookable room isn't a completed trip.\n\nThe intelligence has to connect to the real world.\n\nThe first phase of AI travel was about **answers**.\n\n“What should I do in Tokyo?”\n\nThe second phase is about **recommendations**.\n\n“Which hotel is best for me?”\n\nThe next phase is about **actions**.\n\n“Book it.”\n\nAnd eventually, the most interesting part may be the combination of all three:\n\n**Understand me → Make a decision → Take action.**\n\nThat's what makes an AI agent fundamentally different from a search engine.\n\nA search engine helps me find options.\n\nAn agent is supposed to help me choose.\n\nAnd eventually, act.\n\nWe keep asking:\n\n**“Can AI plan the perfect trip?”**\n\nI'm not sure that's the goal.\n\nI don't want a perfect trip according to the internet.\n\nI want a trip that feels like **me**.\n\nI want an AI that knows I would rather walk through a quiet neighborhood than visit another crowded attraction.\n\nThat I care about a great restaurant more than checking another landmark off a list.\n\nThat sometimes the best recommendation is the one that saves me time.\n\nAnd perhaps most importantly:\n\n**I want an AI that knows what I don't want.**\n\nBecause sometimes knowing what I hate is more useful than knowing what I like.\n\nThis is also why I find the development of AI travel infrastructure so interesting.\n\nAs AI agents
