Paul Graham said 20 years ago, “Look at something people are trying to do, and figure out how to do it in a way that doesn't suck.” We are doing this for documents in the AI age. Pasting or up a document into ChatGPT.com, forcing it to rewrite the entire thing, and copying or down the output... objectively sucks. It’s inefficient and disjointed.
Agentic, collaborative editing #
The goal with Revise is to build a new word processor for the post-AI age. Things are going pretty well—our web app has a growing user base and the Revise Agent has become very reliable. Tens of thousands of people have used the Revise Agent to create or edit their documents since we launched, and more are coming back every day.
This hasn’t been easy; building a word processor from scratch is a lot of work to begin with, and making it intuitive for AI agents to edit collaboratively with people is even harder. We’ve had to debug and fix a lot of interesting problems along the way as users have asked the agent to handle a wide variety of requests.
Bring your own agent #
Things are stabilizing, and now we’re focusing more on the second pillar of the mission: Revise must also work well with outside agents. People already pay for products such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Hermes. They should be able to bring their existing inference and context into Revise. There’s a lot of value in pairing an agent-friendly word processor with the broader memories, context, and plugins these AI apps have about their users.
