Only 14% of the companies scored well on both of the key safety areas, which include owning private data and focusing on one specific, narrow industry. The same AlixPartners study, titled “<em>AI disruption in European SaaS: Understanding distress signals and what it takes to win</em>” and published June 4, 2026, found that around 18% of firms across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, making nearly €45 billion in combined revenue, are at high risk from AI. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This danger is concentrated in companies without strong natural defenses, like legal rules, private data, or tools so deeply built into daily work routines that customers cannot easily switch away. On top of that, AlixPartners’ research points to around €7 to 8 billion in European software loans that must be paid back in 2028, right as this pressure piles up.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">A month before that report came out, Europe’s biggest SaaS gathering called it quits. SaaStock, the ten-year-old conference that was practically the home of the European business software world, shut down. Its founder, Alexander Theuma, <a href="https://www.shiftai.events" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that around $2 trillion in total company value disappeared from the global SaaS market in the first three months of 2026 alone. Theuma said the model of charging money per user seat, which built the entire industry, is under heavy pressure it will not bounce back from.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three strong, independent signs, all appearing within months of each other, point the same way. The old, normal way of running software companies is ending, and AI is the reason. So it makes sense to ask what is really happening inside the companies facing this threat, not the giant corporations with huge research budgets, but the smaller, normal businesses that do not have that kind of safety net. Industry Contents checked six publicly traded Swedish and Norwegian business software companies against their own filed reports, looking at organic growth, lost customers, customer retention, and how each one talks about AI when speaking to investors.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The group we looked at is small and handpicked. Six companies, all based in Sweden or Norway, all trading publicly and sharing their retention rates, makes this group more established and more open with their data than the wider European software market that AlixPartners looked at. The numbers for lost customers and customer retention in this piece are reported directly by the companies themselves and have not been double-checked by outside auditors. When a number could not be confirmed against an official report, that is pointed out. What follows is a clear pattern worth exploring further, not a final answer for the whole market.</p> <h2 id="inside-the-six-companies-numbers" class="wp-block-heading">Inside the six companies’ numbers</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vitec Software Group, a Swedish software company that sells specialized tools to strictly regulated industries like energy, healthcare, and public services, reported that 85% of its sales were recurring in its <a href="https://www.vitecsoftware.com/en/investors-press/reports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">latest quarterly report</a>. Vitec’s leadership team stated plainly that they are “not seeing any material customer churn,” a direct management statement rather than an independently verified number. The company talks about AI in a very routine, low-key way, describing it as woven into “how the companies in the Group develop over time,” an internal tool to help their teams work better rather than an exciting sales pitch for customers, per the same investor materials.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pexip, a Norwegian video meeting company, reported 18% annual growth in subscription revenue and kept over 100% of its customer spending in its <a href="https://investor.pexip.com/reports-and-presentations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">latest quarterly report</a>, both company-reported numbers. This growth was driven mostly by military and national security clients, which now make up 15% of total recurring revenue, more than double what it was a year ago. Pexip’s chief revenue officer explained the reason on the company’s earnings call: European buyers are no longer willing to let their private information sit outside their own direct control. That is not a simple feature comparison. It is a strict buying rule that eliminates new AI-based startups from the race before anyone even talks about price or technical capabilities.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sectra, the Swedish medical imaging and digital security business, has now been named the most trusted company in its field for thirteen straight years by its own clients, based on customer surveys rather than an official audit. Its <a href="https://investor.sectra.com/news-and-press-releases/financial-reports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">latest quarterly report</a> showed overall sales up over 5%, subscription revenue up 20%, and cloud subscription revenue jumping nearly 75%. Sectra’s CEO described AI as a simple extra feature added on top of what they already do well, not as a replacement for it, stating the company’s “in-depth understanding of our customers’ businesses,” combined with AI technology, is the offer, not AI on its own.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Zalaris, the Oslo-based payroll and HR operations company, reports that it loses only 1.5 to 3% of its customers each year on five-year contracts, a company-disclosed figure, not checked by outside parties. Its main protection comes almost entirely from complex legal rules, specifically multi-country tax and payroll laws that a new AI company cannot simply copy just by moving fast. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its main service division had a record-breaking quarter in the second quarter of 2026, according to <a href="https://zalaris.com/about/investors/company-announcements" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zalaris’ investor announcements</a>, and leadership only mentioned AI as an internal way to hit productivity targets, not as a big story for the public.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Four companies across four different industries display one shared pattern, showing healthy underlying numbers that are mostly reported by the companies themselves without outside checks, alongside AI treated as quiet background work rather than the main headline.</p> <h2 id="a-documented-market-mechanism-not-just-a-nordic-pattern" class="wp-block-heading">A documented market mechanism, not just a Nordic pattern</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before looking at the one business that goes against this trend, it is important to show that this behavior is not just happening with six companies in Scandinavia. It is showing up across listed SaaS companies more broadly, including a Swedish one, and across the 500 largest US public companies, and the stock market seemed to start reacting to it directly in 2026.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://ca.investing.com/news/company-news/lime-technologies-ab-stultx-q1-2026-earnings-call-highlights-strong-ai-adoption-and-german--4581385" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lime Technologies</a>, a Swedish CRM software provider listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, is a cleaner Swedish example of the same mechanism than any single company in our six-company group. When an analyst on its Q1 2026 earnings call asked directly what feedback the company was seeing from early AI adopters, management did not answer in vague terms. They gave a number: 10% of the customer base was using the new AI offering in Lime Connect, and the win rate in deals using it was about double the win rate of the company’s previous AI offering. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lime followed that with a Q2 2026 report showing 10% ARR growth, 12% organic revenue growth, and a 25.4% EBITA margin, all while keeping AI framed as one part of a broader vertical-specialization and local-data-governance story rather than a standalone pitch. The stock rose 9.38% on the day of that release.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://insight.factset.com/highest-number-of-sp-500-earnings-calls-citing-ai-over-the-past-10-years-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FactSet’s John Butters, the firm’s VP and Senior Earnings Analyst, found</a> a record 306 to 337 earnings calls among the top 500 US public companies mentioning AI in 2026, the highest number seen in ten years of tracking. But talking about AI did not always help stock prices. According to <a href="https://insight.factset.com/more-than-65-of-sp-500-earnings-calls-for-q4-cited-ai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a separate FactSet analysis</a>, companies that talked about AI on their late-2025 earnings calls saw smaller share price gains than companies that stayed quiet, 1.5% versus 5.6% in one window, and 4.4% versus 4.9% in another. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://seekingalpha.com/news/4633915-65-of-sp-500-companies-mentioned-ai-on-q2-earnings-calls-goldman-sachs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goldman Sachs Research found</a> that while 65% of executive teams mentioned AI in their mid-2026 calls, only 2% put a real dollar amount on how it helped profits, and the difference in earnings growth between companies that shared real numbers and those that did not was, in Goldman’s own words, “small and statistically insignificant.”</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">One widely cited illustration of the same distinction happened in April 2026. Meta’s stock dropped after CEO Mark Zuckerberg replied to an analyst’s question about the financial return on the company’s $125 to 145 billion AI spending by calling it, in his words as reported by <a href="https://fortune.com/2026/04/29/meta-zuckerberg-145-billion-ai-spending-roi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fortune</a>, “a very technical question,” during a quarter where Meta’s revenue grew 33%. Alphabet’s stock went up instead because the company shared specific, measurable dollar gains that AI brought to its cloud business and product usage. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other companies with heavily quantified AI disclosures, including Adobe and UiPath, still saw sharp stock declines in 2026 driven by leadership uncertainty, valuation resets, and sector-wide sentiment unrelated to messaging quality. Quantified AI claims appear to help most cleanly at companies like Lime Technologies and CoreWeave, where the AI story is additive to a clear underlying business, and least reliably where AI numbers are being used to answer a broader worry that the core business itself is under threat. This is the idea to be tested against Swedish and Norwegian businesses. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The point is not that talking about AI is automatically bad, but that using fuzzy, general buzzwords that are not tied to real sales or real customer outcomes usually acts as a cover for a missing answer rather than a real one. A company with real, solid business protection has a concrete story to explain what keeps its revenue safe. A company leaning on vague AI platform talk might be doing so because its real business story is harder to sell to investors.</p> <h2 id="the-company-that-breaks-the-pattern" class="wp-block-heading">The company that breaks the pattern</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.karnovgroup.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karnov Group</a>, the Nordic legal information provider that operates in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, and Portugal, is the one company in our group where the financial results and the AI marketing move in opposite directions compared to the rest. </p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Karnov’s <a href="https://www.karnovgroup.com/en/financial-reports-and-presentations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published interim report</a>, reported revenue fell 6.6% compared to the year before in its latest quarter, and net profit dropped 24%, even though basic underlying sales grew slightly. Over that same time, Karnov talked about AI far more than the other five companies, launching a “Common AI Platform” across all its markets and mentioning “AI-based work tools” in nearly every quarterly update for over a year, all without sharing clear data on what those tools actually changed for sales or customer loyalty.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Karnov is not an odd exception; it is the best real-life example of what this trend is actually measuring, and it matches the difference between fuzzy talk and hard numbers that FactSet and Goldman saw across the wider market, and that Lime Technologies illustrates directly within Sweden’s own listed SaaS sector.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company has a strong defense that has nothing to do with AI: legal explanations written by more than 7,000 named legal experts, which is the kind of trusted, human-created knowledge that an AI model cannot build on its own. That is the exact type of natural advantage that AlixPartners’ own moat framework says is worth protecting. But Karnov’s public messaging focuses on the AI software layer instead of its valuable content library, and it does so without the hard performance numbers that helped Alphabet win over investors while Meta struggled.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is an easy-to-understand business decision, not a simple mistake. Saying that we are valuable because of over a century of built-up legal authority is a harder story to sell to fast-growth investors than saying we are building a modern AI platform. The AI story is easier to raise money for and sounds more exciting to market analysts. But based on these filings and the wider market data, it is a weaker indicator of how the business is really doing compared to the steady, unexciting assets Karnov is keeping quiet about.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vitec, Pexip, Sectra, and Zalaris talk about AI the least in this group and show the strongest customer retention and growth numbers, according to each company’s own published filings linked above. Karnov talks about it the most, shares the fewest hard numbers, and is the only company whose overall sales are shrinking. We did not run an automated software program to count every single time the word AI was used across all six companies’ reports, so this comparison comes from reading the filings rather than an exact mathematical count. Still, the pattern is clear, matches the broader US market data described above, and is worth testing with a strict word-count study in the future.</p> <h2 id="toward-a-reusable-signal" class="wp-block-heading">Toward a reusable signal</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The difference we see here, between a company’s real business defenses and the hard proof behind its AI claims, is very close to a solid, lasting tracking tool that Industry Contents has been working to create. For now, we can call it an AI Narrative Ratio, which tracks the share of a company’s public AI messaging that links to clear, measurable sales or customer results compared to the share that is just vague tech talk with no numbers attached. If tracked regularly each quarter, this ratio could be compared against customer retention and sales growth, just as we did informally with these six companies, and just as Lime Technologies effectively demonstrated in its own investor call.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is presented as an early idea for a tracking tool, not a finished system. It has not yet been tested with a strict scoring method, and it needs to be combined with the existing software tracking tools we are already building before we release it as a main product, since building both at the same time might weaken each one.</p> <h2 id="turning-the-pattern-into-a-checklist-for-operators" class="wp-block-heading">Turning the pattern into a checklist for operators</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">For a Swedish or Norwegian business software leader trying to figure out what to tell the board or the market this quarter, the practical advice is narrower than simply never mention AI. The amount you talk about AI does not prove how strong your business is, and the data from FactSet and Goldman above shows that the market has started figuring this out, because vague AI talk does not improve stock prices, and in many quarters it has actually been linked to worse performance.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This pattern suggests three clear questions that any operations or business leader should ask when reviewing their company’s messaging.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first is to ask what is really keeping customers from canceling their contracts, rather than what sounds good in a sales presentation. Vitec, Pexip, Sectra, and Zalaris all rely on things outside the software itself, including local legal rules, strict government data security, long-term customer trust, and long multi-year contracts, which are things an AI-based startup cannot easily copy. If a leadership team cannot clearly name that specific protection for its own business, heavy AI messaging is likely just hiding a real weakness.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second is to treat heavy, unproven AI talk in a company’s own investor or customer updates as a warning sign to look closer at, not a sign of strength. Karnov started talking a lot more about its AI platform right as its financial numbers weakened, which matches the trend FactSet and Goldman found in the wider market. That does not mean spending money on AI caused the drop in sales. But it does mean the link is close enough that a board should check what is really going on before approving bigger marketing budgets for AI.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third is to separate internal AI tools from the core, long-lasting business assets underneath, and to share real numbers whenever the company talks about AI in public, the way Lime Technologies did when directly asked. Using AI tools is not a mistake, since Sectra and Vitec both use AI inside their daily work. The mistake, as shown by Meta’s stock drop in April 2026 described above, is using loud AI messaging that the company cannot back up with hard figures.</p> <h2 id="the-mechanism-and-its-limits" class="wp-block-heading">The mechanism, and its limits</h2> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">None of this means AI will not affect business software. It simply means that AI is fast at copying basic software features, but slow, and sometimes completely unable, to break through the practical defenses built around those features, such as a hospital’s ten-year vendor relationship, a government agency’s rule that data must stay within its borders, a country’s complex tax code, or a library of legal knowledge written by trusted experts over generations. When a company’s real value sits inside one of these protected setups, AI competitors hit the software interface and stop there. When it does not, the product is completely exposed, no matter how the business talks about itself.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This says nothing about early-stage startups, privately owned firms, or software companies outside Sweden and Norway, where the threats described by AlixPartners might be much more severe, because the group we looked at was intentionally limited to mature, open, publicly listed businesses in two countries. These findings also do not change the financial risks of the European software loans that must be paid back in 2028, which depends on how lending markets work rather than how healthy an individual company is.</p> <p class="wp-block-paragraph">What the six filings prove, within those limits and when read alongside the FactSet, Goldman, and Lime Technologies evidence cited above, is straightforward. For companies with real, solid business protections, talking about AI less, or talking about it only with clear, proven numbers, may be the most honest sign of confidence in what actually keeps the business safe.
