# Wayve launches London's first robotaxis, with a licensed driver still aboard

**Alex Kendall's driving AI is entering public service through Uber with fewer than 20 Mustang Mach-Es and regulatory limits on driverless operation.**

[Wayve](https://wayve.ai/company/?ref=runtimewire) co-founder and CEO [Alex Kendall (@alexgkendall)](https://x.com/alexgkendall?ref=runtimewire) launched his first public autonomous rides in London on Thursday, September 3rd, putting Wayve's AI Driver into [Uber's](https://uber.com/?ref=runtimewire) consumer app at ordinary ride-hailing fares. [Reuters reported](https://www.reuters.com/business/uber-ai-firm-wayve-launch-londons-first-robotaxis-2026-09-02/?ref=runtimewire) that fewer than 20 electric Ford Mustang Mach-Es are available at launch, each carrying a trained, Transport for London-licensed private-hire driver to monitor the system.

The licensed operator makes this a supervised autonomy service. Passengers can book and pay for a ride while the software drives, but a human remains behind the wheel. Removing that supervisor will require further regulatory authorization, and Uber and Wayve have given no timetable for reaching that stage.

Kendall has spent close to a decade building toward this limited public debut. A New Zealand native and Woolf Fisher Scholar, he completed a PhD in deep learning, computer vision and robotics at the University of Cambridge under professor Roberto Cipolla. Kendall and fellow Cambridge researcher Amar Shah [founded Wayve in 2017](https://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/news/wayve-unveils-self-driving-car-trials-central-london?ref=runtimewire) while completing their doctorates.

Wayve grew from Kendall's belief that autonomous driving should be treated as a machine-learning problem. Traditional systems often combine high-definition maps, extensive hand-coded rules and city-specific engineering. Wayve instead trains an end-to-end model on driving data, aiming to produce software that can interpret its surroundings and adapt across roads, cities and vehicle platforms.

London is Kendall's first chance to put that thesis in front of paying passengers. He called the capital Wayve's home city and "one of the most complex driving environments in the world" in [the launch announcement](https://wayve.ai/press/wayve-uber-launch-autonomous-rides/?ref=runtimewire).

### A PhD thesis meets Uber's dispatch system

London riders requesting UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Electric may be matched with a Ford Mustang Mach-E running the [Wayve AI Driver](https://wayve.ai/rides/?ref=runtimewire). Riders can accept the autonomous vehicle or switch to a conventional car before pickup. The usual Uber app unlocks the doors and begins the trip, while an in-car screen available in 64 languages displays the vehicle's planned path.

[Uber said](https://www.uber.com/us/en/newsroom/wayve-on-uber/?ref=runtimewire) the vehicles can carry passengers across London, excluding airports, with no additional charge for the autonomous match. More than 140,000 Londoners had opted into the relevant ride preference before launch, according to Uber. That number measures expressions of interest, rather than completed rides or repeat usage.

The initial fleet is too small to establish whether Wayve can materially improve Uber's economics or replace meaningful driver supply. It can provide something Wayve has lacked: public operating data from ordinary passengers, trips assigned through a mass-market ride-hailing network and roads Wayve has used to train its system since 2018.

The human supervisor also narrows what the rollout can prove. Wayve can study rider behavior, app integration and supervised driving performance. The cost, reliability and remote-support requirements of a fully driverless service will remain unresolved until the safety driver leaves the vehicle.

Uber's autonomous-mobility head Sarfraz Maredia described the immediate goal more plainly to Reuters: the launch should "build credibility with consumers as well as with the government." That credibility matters in a city where regulators and residents have yet to embrace robotaxis at face value.

### Wayve's $8.6 billion licensing bet

Wayve entered the launch with substantial financial backing. On February 25th, Wayve [announced a $1.2 billion Series D](https://wayve.ai/press/series-d/?ref=runtimewire) at an $8.6 billion post-money valuation, led by Eclipse, Balderton and SoftBank Vision Fund 2. Wayve said additional milestone-based capital from Uber brought the total secured around the round to as much as $1.5 billion.

Microsoft, Nvidia and Uber participated alongside automakers Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Stellantis. Those strategic investors map directly onto Kendall's business model. Wayve intends to license its software across automakers and fleets instead of building a single proprietary robotaxi and owning every part of the service.

The London fleet is an early demonstration of that division of labor. Wayve supplies the driving intelligence, Ford supplies a mass-produced electric vehicle and Uber handles matching, payments and the rider experience. Kendall's larger bet requires the same software architecture to travel across additional cars and cities without rebuilding the autonomy stack for every market.

Uber first made a strategic investment in Wayve as part of an [August 29th, 2024 partnership](https://investor.uber.com/news-events/news/press-release-details/2024/Wayve-and-Uber-Partner-to-Accelerate-the-Future-of-Automated-Driving/?ref=runtimewire). The investment amount was not specified. By February 2026, Wayve and Uber were discussing deployments in more than 10 markets, giving Kendall a distribution partner while allowing Uber to avoid choosing a single autonomous-driving supplier.

### Uber is collecting robotaxi suppliers

Uber is positioning its app as the demand and distribution layer for autonomous fleets built by several competing developers. Three weeks before the Wayve launch, [RuntimeWire reported that Pony.ai and Uber planned more than 2,000 robotaxis across four European cities](/article/pony-ai-uber-2000-robotaxis-europe-2). Uber also works with Waymo and other autonomous-vehicle developers in markets outside London.

That supplier strategy lets Uber retain the customer relationship while autonomy developers absorb much of the technical risk. Human drivers can continue serving trips when robotaxi coverage is thin, weather disrupts a fleet or an autonomous vehicle cannot handle a particular route. For Wayve, Uber supplies demand without forcing Kendall to build a separate consumer ride-hailing network city by city.

Waymo is preparing its own London service and has said it intends to offer fully autonomous rides. Its public London testing has also involved trained specialists behind the wheel. Wayve has reached public passengers first, but the decisive milestone will be a service that operates without an onboard supervisor.

Regulation will set the pace. The UK government [opened applications on May 22nd](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/passengers-one-step-closer-to-booking-taxi-and-bus-style-self-driving-vehicles?ref=runtimewire) for limited passenger-carrying autonomous services, with local authorities required to consent. Reuters reported that Transport for London's authorization process remains a barrier to fully driverless operation.

Public trust is another constraint. A [London Assembly-commissioned YouGov survey](https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/london-assembly-press-releases/42-londoners-oppose-introduction-robocabs?ref=runtimewire) conducted in June found that 42% of 1,053 London residents opposed autonomous passenger vehicles, while 29% supported them. Nearly half cited the vehicles' ability to respond to emergencies and other unexpected situations as a concern.

Kendall's first public deployment is modest beside Wayve's valuation and global ambitions. It is still a meaningful transition for research that began inside a Cambridge lab. Wayve's map-light driving system is carrying real passengers through London, even if a licensed driver remains ready to take over. The next step will determine whether Kendall has built a general driving platform or an unusually well-funded supervised service.
