Superhero movies weren't dominating the box office, and tapping the Evil Dead director for a PG-13 action romp that had been in development hell for 25 years wasn't guaranteed to work out. Thankfully, the flick was a huge hit, thanks to Tobey Maguire's excellent performance, Raimi's genius for vertiginous action, and Willem Dafoe's meme-spawning performance as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin. When a scheming con artist gets himself arrested as a way to protect himself from the hitman on his trail, he soon discovers that his killer is behind bars with him at the police station, and the two must play a game of cat and mouse while not alerting the cops.
