One of the most compelling sci-fi films of the century so far, [Ex Machina](https://www.netflix.com/title/80023689) wrestles with many of the big ideas around AI that we're still figuring out. Domnhall Gleeson plays a programmer brought to his boss's private island to evaluate the progress of a humanoid robot's artificial mind. But things get increasingly complicated as the boundary between humans and androids blurs.

It's crazy to think now, but back in 2002, Sam Raimi's [Spider-Man](https://www.netflix.com/title/60004481) was a huge gamble for Sony. Superhero movies weren't dominating the box office, and tapping the *Evil Dead* director for a PG-13 action romp that had been in development hell for 25 years wasn't guaranteed to work out. Thankfully, the flick was a huge hit, thanks to Tobey Maguire's excellent performance, Raimi's genius for vertiginous action, and Willem Dafoe's meme-spawning performance as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin. This movie and both its sequels leave Netflix on the 5th.

Netflix simply has too many movies for them all to get their due, and 2021's *Copshop* may have flown under your radar. It's a taut little action thriller with some fun performances by "hey, it's *that* guy" actors like Toby Huss and Frank Grillo, ably directed by Joe Carnahan. When a scheming con artist gets himself arrested as a way to protect himself from the hitman on his trail, he soon discovers that his killer is behind bars with him at the police station, and the two must play a game of cat and mouse while not alerting the cops.
