Superhero movies weren't dominating the box office, and tapping the *Evil Dead* director for a PG-13 action romp that had been in development hell for 25 years wasn't guaranteed to work out. Thankfully, the flick was a huge hit, thanks to Tobey Maguire's excellent performance, Raimi's genius for vertiginous action, and Willem Dafoe's meme-spawning performance as Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin.
