Walmart will let AI agents shop for you, just as Amazon locks them out Walmart announced on Wednesday that shoppers can send their own AI agents to buy from Walmart.com and Sam's Club through a new "Agent Gateway," an MCP server built on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, with spending limits and approvals set by the customer. Walmart president and CEO John Furner unveiled the plan at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco; it includes Agent Profiles, launching within the next month, which give each authorized agent its own profile inside a customer's account, and a set of terms requiring agents to identify themselves, never receive payment card details, and use only the information a task needs. The move contrasts with Amazon, which blocked Meta's Muse from its store in September and has fought Perplexity's Comet browser in court, as Walmart bets that agents signing in through its own front door and following its rules can be trusted.
