The world's largest independent energy trader is betting that its expertise in power markets gives it an edge in the data center gold rush.
Vitol, the world’s largest independent energy trading house, just made a move that says a lot about where the smart money thinks energy markets are heading. The company’s renewables arm, VC Renewables, has acquired a 600 MW data center campus in South Carolina from Meridian Gridworks, marking one of the first times a major commodity trader has planted its flag squarely in AI infrastructure.
The deal and why it matters #
The acquisition, disclosed in mid-August 2026, gives Vitol control of a campus with 600 megawatts of capacity. To put that in perspective, 600 MW is enough electricity to power roughly 450,000 homes, or, more relevantly, enough to run a massive hyperscale data center operation serving the compute-hungry needs of AI model training and inference.
Meridian Gridworks, the seller, was founded in 2025 and specializes in data centers, edge computing, and renewable energy development. Despite selling the campus, Meridian will continue to oversee its ongoing development.
South Carolina has quietly become a magnet for data center investment. Hundreds of megawatts of operating and planned capacity have materialized in the state in recent years, backed by multi-billion-dollar investments.
Vitol’s existing platform, VPI, already provides data center operators with Power Purchase Agreements, environmental products, and integrated solutions that combine solar, battery storage, and natural gas assets. This acquisition transforms Vitol from a service provider to data centers into an actual owner-operator of the underlying infrastructure.
Why a commodity trader wants to own data centers #
Vitol isn’t just buying a building full of servers. It’s acquiring a massive, predictable source of power demand that it can supply using its own energy trading capabilities. The company can source natural gas, procure renewable energy credits, structure PPAs, and manage the complex interplay between grid power and on-site generation, all capabilities it already possesses.
This vertical integration model, where the energy supplier becomes the infrastructure owner, is increasingly attractive as data center operators face growing scrutiny from utilities and regulators over their power consumption. Utilities in several US markets have pushed back against new data center connections, citing grid strain.
Commodity traders enter the tech stack #
The Southeast US market, where this campus sits, is experiencing particularly strong growth in data center demand. States like South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia have competed aggressively to attract hyperscale facilities, offering tax incentives and expedited permitting.
