Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv join Agentic Payments Alliance to shape AI payment standards

Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv are founding members of the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA), a coalition of over 25 organizations announced by stablecoin payment infrastructure provider Rain on August 18 to create shared standards for AI-driven commerce. McKinsey projects global agentic commerce activity could reach $3 to $5 trillion by 2030, and the alliance will focus on AI agent identity, authorization, fraud prevention, loyalty integration, and regulatory advocacy.

A new coalition of over 25 founding members wants to write the rulebook for AI agents that spend money on your behalf

The payments industry just placed a very large bet on a future where software agents, not humans, handle the bulk of commercial transactions. Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv are among the founding members of the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA), a coalition of more than 25 organizations designed to create shared standards for AI-driven commerce.

Rain, a stablecoin payment infrastructure provider, announced the formation of the APA on August 18. The coalition is structured without any single company owning or controlling it, operating instead as a collectively governed body where members shape its mission and objectives together.

What the alliance actually does #

McKinsey projects global agentic commerce activity could hit $3 to $5 trillion by 2030. The alliance’s initial focus areas break down into five buckets: AI agent identity and authorization frameworks, shared research initiatives, fraud prevention mechanisms, loyalty program integration, and regulatory advocacy.

Several founding members aren’t starting from scratch. Visa has already launched its Agentic Ready Program, and Mastercard has developed its Agent Pay framework. Rain contributes its own Agentic Startup Program, an accelerator designed to support emerging businesses building in the agentic commerce space.

Why stablecoins matter here #

Rain’s role as the coalition’s organizer is notable. The company builds stablecoin payment infrastructure, and its position at the center of this alliance signals something meaningful about the expected plumbing of agent-driven commerce.

The APA’s emphasis on interoperability among card networks, stablecoin frameworks, and blockchain technologies suggests members understand that fragmentation is the real enemy of scale.

The competitive landscape #

The APA isn’t operating in a vacuum. The FIDO Alliance, originally built around passwordless authentication standards, has been expanding its work into adjacent identity verification territory. Various emerging protocols are also attempting to define how autonomous agents should interact with financial systems.

By assembling heavyweights like Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv under one banner, the APA is essentially trying to establish itself as the default standard-setter before the market fragments into competing frameworks. The coalition operates without single-entity ownership, theoretically allowing smaller members and newer entrants to have meaningful input alongside trillion-dollar incumbents.
