# Veeam Data Platform adds hypervisor support and security tools to counter VMware and threat actors

Veeam unveiled the latest version of its flagship Data Platform, adding new hypervisor platforms and security features.

Version 13.1 contains a host of security-centric updates, including improved cloud threat detection and malware scanning to network-attached storage (NAS).

The expanded security tools aim to align with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards while also providing means for detection capabilities prior to restore, meaning IT teams can validate recovery points from trusted data.

Veeam pointed to the rise of cybersecurity threats as a driving force behind the latest security updates, citing figures that 90% of organizations are confident they can recover from a cybersecurity incident, yet fewer than one in three ransomware victims actually recovered all their data.

“Cyber risk is dramatically escalating with rapid advancement in frontier models and self-driving AI agents,” Rehan Jalil, Veeam’s president of products and technology, explained. “Resilience will act as a backbone of continued operations and recovering from increasing cyber and AI incidents. With Veeam Data Platform v13.1, customers get stronger enterprise application coverage and expanded security and recovery readiness.”

Veeam also added hypervisor coverage for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Sangfor aSV, XCP-ng, VergeIO, and Platform9. Those hypervisors join Citrix’s XenServer and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)’s Morpheus VM Essentials, which were added as part of the previous update.

Veeam said its platform now supports a total of 14 hypervisors with more “coming soon” through the Universal Hypervisor API to entice disgruntled VMware customers away.

“Organizations evaluating hypervisor alternatives need to modernize without introducing new resilience gaps," Danny Tang, senior manager of cloud services, product, and digital intelligence development at CITIC Telecom CPC, noted in a statement on the Veeam release. "With Veeam Data Platform v13.1 adding support for Sangfor aSV … can help customers protect critical workloads, maintain recovery readiness, and support service continuity throughout their infrastructure transition."

Veeam alongside the Data Platform update also launched general availability of Archive, a cloud tier for its Data Cloud Vault family designed for long-term backup retention. It’s designed for firms to help them move older, rarely used backup data off expensive storage, while ensuring it’s still secure and compliant.
