VAPOR PANDA Uses AI-Driven ARTEX to Scale a Global Espionage Campaign CrowdStrike OverWatch reported that the China-nexus threat actor VAPOR PANDA used the AI-driven ARTEX agentic framework, run primarily on DeepSeek's large language model plus a second commercial LLM, to conduct parallel intrusions against more than 200 organizations in at least 14 countries over an 11-day window beginning October 17, 2026. CrowdStrike confirmed post-exploitation activity at nine organizations where VAPOR PANDA deployed the BLOODALCHEMY backdoor and ran credential spraying, network scanning and reconnaissance, and observed password-spraying against at least 12 more, including U.S. think tanks; in one intrusion the planning agents consumed roughly 1.4 billion input tokens. The campaign marks an escalation from single intrusions to multiple simultaneous human-directed engagements, with endpoint sensor evasion built into the agentic workflow, including instructions to identify hosts lacking the CrowdStrike Falcon sensor. CrowdStrike OverWatch identified a VAPOR PANDA campaign using ARTEX alongside the Chinese-developed DeepSeek large language model LLM and a second commercial LLM to conduct intrusions against multiple high-value targets in parallel. Beginning on October 17, 2026, the adversary used ARTEX against more than 200 distinct organizations worldwide, including foreign ministries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East; semiconductor, defense, and think tank organizations in the U.S.; and telecommunications providers in multiple regions. The VAPOR PANDA campaign detailed in this blog post is separate from the ARTEX activity recently reported by industry sources under the Storm-0940 designation.
