Upcoming deprecation of selected GitHub Copilot models in mid-October

GitHub will deprecate six models across all GitHub Copilot experiences — including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions — on October 19th, 2026. The retired models are Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5 mini, and Grok 4.5, with GitHub recommending Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Luna, and Grok 4.6 as replacements. GitHub said the suggested alternatives are automatically enabled for Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business customers under default model enablement unless an administrator has turned off the global default, and that no action is required to remove the deprecated models.

If you’ve turned off the global default, you can enable access to the alternative models through their model policies in Copilot settings. Once enabled, users will see the model in the Copilot Chat model selector in supported GitHub Copilot experiences. No action is required to remove the models after they have been deprecated.
