Unity unveils Unity Spark, an prompt-based tool for Google's AI games platform

Unity announced Unity Spark, a prompt-based game development tool built exclusively for Google's AI platform, which the two companies are calling Playground. Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg said Spark connects directly to the Unity Asset Store and is aimed at users who "know exactly what's missing" in a genre but don't code, adding that "this isn't about 'one-shotting.'" The announcement comes as game developers remain divided on generative AI, with Steam requiring AI disclosure on store pages and Unity itself promising stronger copyright guardrails after an employee generated an image of Disney's Mickey Mouse with Unity Muse on a live stream.

Unity's new tool allows prompt-based game development, working in collaboration with Google AI.

Unity, one of game development's preeminent engine creators, has announced a strategic partnership with Google to leverage AI for prompt-based game development for Google's AI platform, which is dubbed "Playground." As part of Playground's developer environment, Unity is introducing a new tool named Unity Spark, a user interface specifically built for making games with user-created prompts.

In a press release, Unity describes Spark as an "expanded creation experience," that is capable of "unlocking robust, professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D capabilities, and the ultimate flexibility of Unity runtime." Unity goes on to describe Spark as beginning game development with a text prompt to "eventually" grow into full game experiences, skipping the step of coding.

"This isn't about 'one-shotting,' said Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg in a blog post accompanying the announcement. "Asking AI to regurgitate an already invented game does not make you the next Hideo Kojima, any more than re-typing the first paragraph of War and Peace in your word processor makes you Tolstoy."

Spark, as part of a collaboration with Google, is exclusively for use with Google's AI platform, with the pair dubbing the entire environment Playground. Within the realm of Playground, developers using the tools can use Google's own publishing tools and share their work with others, as well as incorporate Google's own existing technologies for leaderboards, matchmaking, and community features.

"Unity Spark is about being able to create real, unique interactive experiences, Bromberg continued. "To build something worth working on, polishing, and sharing. It’s about using the new technology to enable more people to express themselves. And it all begins with the game art. Unity Spark connects directly to the Unity Asset Store, so you can build with thousands of high-quality, artist-created assets made by our community."

"We made Unity Spark for the gamers who have spent a thousand hours inside a genre and know exactly what’s missing. The graphic artist who wants to bring their vision to life but doesn’t know how to code. Modders who now want to create something entirely new. That's the opportunity we see: Folks with real creative conviction who can now fulfill their full potential."

Generative AI Still Controversial In Game Development #

While the tool is a logical step for Unity, which has been AI-forward in its success, developer criticism of AI and its place within creation has been more mixed overall. Recent surveys indicate that creatives within the game industry are worried and cynical about generative AI for game development and its effect on the quality of games. Unity itself has expressed a need for stronger guard rails on generative AI within its own tools after an employee used Unity Muse to generate an image of Disney's Mickey Mouse on an official live stream, prompting copyright concerns.

Moreover, from an audience perspective, developers are still assessing audience response to the use of generative AI tools in game development. Pocketpair, developers of the wildly successful Palworld, "doesn't believe in it" arguing that the audience will likely stay away from games that incorporate it. Valve's Steam, the largest PC gaming marketplace, requires a disclosure for AI tools or content used within a game that is then presented on each game's store page.

Earlier this year, Totally Human Media CEO Ichiro Lambe noted that over 8000 games on Steam featured the AI disclosure, but that disclosure does not seem to meaningfully affect the user review scores of games that bear one.
