After helping a lot of developers prep across vendors, I've come to believe the certifications are far more alike than the marketing suggests. Once you see the shared skeleton, picking a path gets a lot easier.\n\nThis post is the mental map I give developers who are staring at a wall of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, DataBricks, and Salesforce AI certs and don't know where to start.\n\nThe Vendors Disagree on Words, Not Concepts\n\nEach cloud provider brands its AI track differently, but underneath, they're testing the same handful of competencies. Strip away the product names and almost every cloud AI certification is checking whether you can:\n\n• frame a business problem as an ML problem\n\n• choose an appropriate approach (classification, regression, clustering, generative)\n\n• prepare and reason about data\n\n• use the vendor's managed services instead of building from scratch\n\n• deploy, monitor, and govern a model responsibly\n\nIf you understand those five things, you understand 80% of what any cloud AI exam is actually assessing. The remaining 20% is vendor-specific service names and console workflows — memorization, not comprehension.\n\nThe Two Tiers Every Vendor Has\n\nAcross providers, cloud AI certifications fall into two broad tiers, and conflating them is the most common planning mistake I see.\n\nFoundational / practitioner tier. These are concept-and-vocabulary exams. They test whether you can talk intelligently about AI, recognize use cases, and understand the responsible-AI guardrails. They rarely require hands-on building. This tier is where most developers should start, regardless of vendor — it's cheap insurance against sounding lost in a design discussion.\n\nAssociate / specialty tier. These assume you can actually build and operate ML systems on the platform — data pipelines, training jobs, deployment, monitoring, cost and security tradeoffs.
