UK police have debunked viral videos claiming a sinister Cat in the Hat figure is stalking streets and home #
UK police have been forced to reassure residents that a supposed 'Cat in the Hat serial killer' is not real after AI-generated videos showing the Dr Seuss character stalking streets and homes spread across social media. By 25 August, police forces including South Yorkshire, Cheshire and Cumbria had addressed the trend, while the original scare had already prompted Gardaí in Ireland to confirm that the frightening images circulating online were fabricated.
The scare appears to have grown from a social media joke rather than any real criminal investigation. Images and clips showed a life-sized Cat in the Hat lurking outside houses, appearing on driveways, staring through windows and, in some versions, carrying what looked like a knife. The material was convincing enough to unsettle teenagers, with some posts presented as warnings about a dangerous figure moving from town to town.
Cat in the Hat Videos Spread Across UK Towns #
The first widely reported sightings centred on Ireland, particularly Wexford and Waterford, before the trend crossed into Britain. Gardaí in Wexford eventually issued an unusually direct reassurance, saying the phenomenon was essentially an AI prompt placing the fictional character into photographs and videos of familiar locations.
'To be clear, the Cat in the Hat was not in your driveway while you were out and he is not currently hiding out in Curracloe,' the force said.
That did little to stop the trend travelling.
In South Yorkshire, a fabricated statement attributed to the fictional 'Yorkshire Police' claimed officers had received reports of a suspicious Cat in the Hat around Meadowhall at about 2.30 am. There is no police force called Yorkshire Police. South Yorkshire Police said it had received no such reports and urged people to check whether supposed policing updates had actually come from an official account.
The fake statement is revealing. The images may have been absurd, but dressing them in the language of an official police warning gave the hoax another layer of credibility.
The trend has since appeared in Warrington, where videos placed the character at recognisable local locations including Victoria Park and a Tesco Express in Grappenhall. Cheshire Police told local media it had received no reports of the supposed incidents and warned that some social media accounts contained AI-generated content designed to attract clicks.
AI Cat in the Hat Scare Leaves Teenagers Frightened #
For some viewers, the joke stopped being funny. A 16-year-old girl told media that she became frightened after watching the videos on TikTok during a sleepover and eventually called her mother to collect her. The account illustrates why police have taken the unusual step of publicly debunking what might otherwise look like a harmless internet meme.
Some of the material is unmistakably AI-generated, while other posts appear to involve costumes, editing or a mixture of techniques. That means not every image featuring the character can automatically be described as AI. What has been debunked is the suggestion that a genuine serial killer dressed as the Cat in the Hat is travelling around British and Irish communities.
There is no evidence that such a criminal exists.
A safeguarding advisory published on 25 August also warned parents and young people about the trend, noting that AI-generated clips had depicted the character 'terrorising' streets, threatening to visit homes and appearing on doorbell cameras. It said some posts had falsely claimed violence, including stabbings and chases.
By 26 August, the trend was still circulating online despite the police warnings. In Warrington, Cheshire Police advised people with genuine concerns to contact the force through 101 and urged local media not to promote accounts producing the videos, warning that publicity could encourage copycat content.
The 'serial killer' exists only inside the posts. The fear, however, has been very real.
