Britain and the United States are preparing to enter into two formal agreements designed to deepen bilateral co-operation on artificial intelligence and fusion power, in an effort to accelerate a breakthrough in clean energy generation.

Replicating the natural atomic process that powers the sun, fusion combines two hydrogen isotopes under extreme temperatures to release massive quantities of energy without generating planet-warming carbon emissions.
Researchers worldwide have dedicated decades to mastering this technology as an unlimited source of zero-carbon power, although no experimental reactor has yet achieved net energy output.
Under one of the new accords, a supercomputing partnership will be established between the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.
The joint venture seeks to integrate capabilities in artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and fusion research to hasten the development of a commercially viable energy source.
In addition, the London summit will feature a joint statement committing both governments to closer regulatory alignment on fusion energy.
Officials noted that shared regulatory frameworks will assist in driving financial investment and encouraging broader growth across the sector.
In the UK, fusion technology is increasingly regarded as a key industry within the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor—a Government strategy aimed at boosting innovation and economic performance across the region connecting the country’s leading academic institutions.
Energy minister Michael Shanks said: "Fusion has the potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy while supporting more than 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030, attracting investment and creating major opportunities for British businesses.
"By strengthening our partnership with the US we’re accelerating the race to commercial fusion, turning cutting-edge research into economic growth and cementing Britain’s position as a world leader in fusion energy."
The new deals sit within a wider framework of nuclear co-operation between the two nations, occurring alongside noticeable differences in their overarching energy policies.
US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised the UK’s focus on accelerating the green energy transition as his administration supports fossil fuels, yet both sides have established common ground regarding their ambitions to advance nuclear fission and fusion.
Chris Elmore, foreign minister for the Americas, said: "The UK’s relationship with the United States supports growth and thousands of jobs at home.
"By bringing together world-leading expertise in fusion, artificial intelligence and advanced computing, we’re helping British businesses and researchers access the investment, knowledge and international partnerships needed to succeed in the industries of the future."
Prior to the summit, £2.63 million in funding was awarded to the University of Birmingham, the Electric Power Research Institute, and commercial partners to collaborate on developing fusion materials.
Meanwhile, Kyoto Fusioneering, Japan’s largest fusion firm, is set to direct up to £3 million into the UK through an initiative known as "Project Albion".
This scheme will assist in testing and developing specialised materials for the Government-backed "spherical tokamak for energy production" programme, which aims to design a prototype fusion power plant.
The UK is also publishing a dedicated fusion investment prospectus detailing current opportunities for commercial investors while outlining strategies to capture market share in a future global fusion sector estimated to be worth between £3 trillion and £12 trillion.
This follows a commitment announced by the Government last year to allocate £2.5 billion to fusion energy over a five-year timeframe.
