# UK and US governments sign agreements to advance AI in nuclear fusion

A new supercomputing partnership between UKAEA and Princeton's plasma physics lab aims to accelerate the decades-long quest for commercial fusion energy

Nuclear fusion has been “30 years away” for roughly 60 years now. The UK and US governments are betting that artificial intelligence can finally close that gap.

On September 14, 2026, during the Global Fusion Summit in London, the two countries are set to sign a pair of linked agreements designed to accelerate AI and advanced computing applications in fusion research. The centerpiece is a supercomputing partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the US Department of Energy’s Princeton [Plasma](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/plasma/) Physics Laboratory (PPPL), two of the world’s most prominent fusion research institutions.

## What the agreements actually do

The first agreement establishes a formal framework for UKAEA and PPPL to collaborate on high-performance computing and AI as applied to fusion science.

The second piece of the agreement is a joint regulatory statement. Both governments plan to align their licensing frameworks for fusion energy, with the goal of streamlining the path from experimental reactor to commercial power plant.

## The economic bet

The UK government is projecting over 10,000 new jobs in the country’s fusion sector by 2030.

These agreements build on the 2025 Technology Prosperity Deal between the UK and US, which identified AI, civil nuclear, and fusion technologies as strategic priorities for bilateral collaboration. That deal laid the diplomatic groundwork; the new fusion agreements are the first concrete infrastructure to emerge from it.
