His Own Team Is Still Fighting Over It. ## Commerce and the White House tech policy office are competing for influence as Washington urges G20 countries to take a lighter approach to AI regulation. The [Trump administration](https://www.ibtimes.com/topic/donald-trump) is urging other countries to follow the U.S. lead on [artificial intelligence](https://www.ibtimes.com/social-tags/artificial-intelligence) and resist imposing sweeping new regulations, even as disagreements inside the administration over who should shape that policy have spilled into this week's G20 Innovation Summit in North Carolina. Tensions between the Commerce Department and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, or OSTP, have intensified as both seek influence over President Donald Trump's AI agenda, [Axios](https://www.axios.com/2026/09/02/trump-ai-g20-innovation-summit) detailed. A White House spokesperson rejected the characterization of a split, saying the two offices were jointly leading the summit and that Trump's team was working together to promote American AI leadership. Washington's message to other G20 members has been more consistent, with U.S. officials pushing governments to avoid creating broad new regulatory structures for AI.Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang similarly urged governments to focus regulation on demonstrated harms rather than theoretical risks. That position follows the administration's existing push to reduce regulatory barriers at home. The [White House AI Action Plan](https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2025/07/white-house-unveils-americas-ai-action-plan/) calls for accelerating innovation, expanding U.S. AI infrastructure and promoting American technology internationally, including full-stack AI packages combining chips, models, software and applications. Trump has also called for a uniform national regulatory framework rather than a patchwork of state AI laws. [The White House](https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2026/03/president-donald-j-trump-unveils-national-ai-legislative-framework/) also said in March that its proposed framework would seek to remove unnecessary barriers while addressing issues including children's safety, intellectual property and free speech. The administration has yet to settle several major elements of its AI policy, however. Axios reported that officials are still discussing oversight of the most advanced AI models, including a proposal for a new regulatory body modeled partly on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, while Trump's outside AI adviser David Sacks has opposed creating another regulator. The administration's international push will extend beyond the North Carolina meeting.
