The US government just got a front door. President Trump signed an executive order on September 29 establishing America.gov, a single AI-powered website designed to replace the labyrinth of roughly 29,000 federal web pages with something that actually resembles a modern user experience.
The platform launched with a conversational AI interface powered by two models simultaneously: Google’s Gemini and Grok, the AI system built by Elon Musk’s xAI. Citizens can type plain-language questions and get responses sourced exclusively from official government information.
What it does (and what it doesn’t) #
America.gov’s initial capabilities focus on the kind of paperwork that makes people dread interacting with their government. The launch version handles name-change processes, like updating Social Security records and passport information after a marriage. Full Medicare enrollment functionality is expected to come online within the next year.
The executive order requires federal agencies to fast-track integration of their public-facing services into the platform, with a specific threshold: any service that handles more than 100,000 users annually needs to get on board.
IRS tax filing and certain national-security functions are explicitly excluded from the initiative.
The site is free, ad-free, and doesn’t require login credentials for basic usage. User authentication through Login.gov and additional transactional features will be layered in through future updates, creating a phased rollout that starts with information retrieval and gradually moves toward letting people actually complete government tasks through the portal.

The launch event and its cast of characters #
Trump announced the platform at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, flanked by a roster that read like a tech industry power lunch. Vice President JD Vance attended alongside Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Trump framed the initiative as a restoration of the nation’s founding promise and a modernized approach to citizen-government interaction fit for the 21st century.
The dual-model approach is notable. Rather than picking a single AI vendor, the administration opted to run both Gemini and Grok simultaneously.
Why a unified portal matters #
The 29,000-website figure captures the scale of fragmentation. Each agency built its own digital presence over the years, resulting in an ecosystem where citizens essentially need to know which corner of the government handles their specific need before they can even begin the process.
That last point is the critical risk factor. AI chatbots are known to occasionally fabricate information with complete confidence. The restriction to official government sources as the AI’s knowledge base is clearly designed to mitigate this.
